I mainly go for the lung shot (broadside) as they're a varmint proj as you say, so if it hits a rib it pulverises the internal tissue so they don't go far. If it's close that I can neck or head shoot...

90gn Speer hp in front of 26gns of 2207 for a little over 2800fps out of a 20inch barreled Howa mini action stainless. Very accurate & deadly on goats & deer. They don't go far except down.

It depends on ones ability & eyesight. i've got a mini actioned Howa with 3-9 scope & can consistantly knock over goats & odd deer out @ 200 mtres, but wouldn't want to shoot @b that distance too...

We often see deer @200yds+ across gullies etc while bush stalking goats. Too far "FOR ME" to kill reliably with my 223 so use the JW 103 Bisley 7.62x39 or Sako260 instead. Too expensive to shoot...
