The top of the photo is the Otago/Canterbury border, and not so far from you in Omarama, so I guess that's why it looks similar!

Can't see it, but behind the dog is the scrubby matagouri and grasses in the gully system described above. Where I went is close to farmland so my guess is deer were lower down near the better feed,...
