Actually it's quite an impressive bit of machining to get the bottom of the end threads flat whilst also reducing the thread depth. Not just a matter of machining a tapered thread.

Looks like your typical tapered pipe threading. Oh, yes, Remington. Probably found a bit of old pipe leaning against the wall at the back of the factory.
