Bummer! Never leave carbon steel in its sheath long term, the leather holds moisture.

How do you find that profile for field boning work? Manage around balls joints etc OK?

Use a sacrificial backer when drilling your holes, stops that chipout.

Looks great man. Lovely warmth to the timber scales. Next one do the blade too! Start with thin-ish stock and it's really not to bad to bevel by hand

I use wax mainly man, but same as Viper using stabilised timbers.

I wax and polish with 0000 steel wool. Gives a nice almost buffed finish that still has a little grip.

Yup that looks good.

Use the pin holes to connect the scales together, this keeps the scales even, just work like it's one piece of material.
