Each person carries a PLB so if needed it is there. And better still some sort of communication (radio) to let camp know plans have changed. And in this day and age where decent headlights are not...

I would not worry about retraining on a GPS......A compass wont get a flat battery. Even with a GPS, I would always take a compass.

I guess that works if the group gets lost....
