Yes I had the correct adjustable reamer from removing 6.5mm doughnuts
Yes I had to inside neck turn some cases .
But that was more to do with variation in bullet diameter with bullet types and powder coatings
The 25 RF is a very small case and forming it from 22...
Yes the acorn blank just goes in as is.
It's just a primer of sorts
Accuracy is excellent when you hve the right bullets
AR7 I made a top punch yesterday to fit the gas checks in my lube sized and now that I don't have a mould I will try on the slugs
I have shot the 36 grain H&N slugs and got a 50mm 30m group
Then I powder coated them to bump them up 2 thou and it did improve the group size
But still not as good a group as the Lyman 65 grain...
I'm on the verge of making lathe turned brass just out of interest
And this is why it's a bit of a shame we lost the 25 and 32 RF
Left 22 LR
Middle 22 WMR
Right 25 RF Stevens
221408
And clearly the use of the Spencer's magazine is no longer an option due to timing the primer on to the firing pin
gundoc a friend had asked me to do this for a 56-56 Spencer carbine he has
I just haven't had time to look into the parent case that it could be done with.
But it's the same basic technique that's...
AR7 I have 100 of the 36 grainers coming
But sadly Via Aramex so slow or lost if previous parcels are a guide
If you have a lathe and 25 ACP dies there are ONLY 11 steps in process to make this RF brass
2 special lathe mandrels
A modified 22 hornet shell holder
And some reamers
Realistically I could...
Well I dug out the 25 RF Stevens favorite I brought for parts last year ( or might not have looked at the caliber markings well enough) and cleaned the barrel to see if it was worth fixing for you
...
You just want to buy them !
And the older ammo was black powder.
That's what I tested in this for function and it was seriously filthy and hard to clean the bore
Which makes it amazing how good the bore is on this one
AR7 Thinking about your project I think if it was me doing that single shot I would run with the 25 ACP chamber and leave the 22 Hornet case rim on it.
Cut the chamber
Cut the rim rebate for head...
AR7 Making 22 hornet brass to 25 hornet is really easy.
But then I used a 25 ACP carbide sizer die to take the body taper down to the 25 RF diameter. This only partly works because the sizer...
So if anyone wants to get a vintage 25 RF shooting good clean safe new RF ammo I can show them how to do it
BUT it is not easy to make the brass
And I have spent a stupid amount of time on these...
Put together 5 rounds to go for a late afternoon hunt
Shot this hare at 45m
221219
Straight through the top of the heart and what a lot of damage
221220
So this evening I have done...
So today a bag of bullets arrive courtesy of a kind forum member
67 grain Lyman
75 grain NOE
85 grain
Straight to the workshop
67 grains over 2.5 grains of trailboss
First 3 shots 12mm at...
So now I want to go live fire
Parted off 3x 120 grain 257 bullets to around 60 grains
221215
Sit them on 2.0 grains of trailboss
First shot low and sub sonic
Correct rear tang sight
Next 2...
First job was to test fire with vintage black powder 25 RF ammo
221212
Then plan it out the case to take acorn caps as RF primers
221210
Check the RF firing pin
I got a very nice Winchester 1885 25 RF recently.
Circa 1910
Very good condition mechanically and an excellent bore
Original idea was chamber 25-20 and convert to center Fire.
But it's so...
