today while hunting I had my bolt semi open..and as soon as got into tight scrubbery...or slung it over shoulder...the bolt got shut...
Well at least we have moved away from what was a shocker of a practise I often saw used 40 years ago...bolt closed with trigger held back so the fireing pin was sitting on primer.....I know of one...
The ONE THING we all take away from discussion like this is a little more awareness of what we do and why.that just HAS to be a good thing as we more aware of it's possible failings. Stay safe out...

WOW that photo is better than hoped...top silver bolt is howa 1500 that is in the spring stretched position,the striker is back at rear of bolt and the sticky up cleaner metal bit is what the sear...

hammer is held in full cock position by sear on a hammer gun...unless you have trigger pulled
..yes spring is indeed under tension when modern bolt is in that position but the striker is prevented...
and also just where the bolt is sitting when you do it.

nope I do not...a hammer gun is cocked when the hammer is pulled completely back and held by the sear...it is on half cock when it is not all the way back,it sits in a position where it cant touch...
yes AND no..... because the striker is not in the open groove untill handle is rotated..so yes spring is in the same position as when ready to fire..but unless sear is enguaged it will slide down the...
it works...but wouldnt rely on it....lol unless man eater was up in tree above me LOL.... funny the things you try when YDFOC.....
