Thread: G'day Plenty new folks, Me included.

Hi folks,
Looks like plenty of new members here.
It seems warm and welcoming thanks.
I'm in Whanganui, in my 30s, had my license for a few months and a 22. I got cheap from a friend whos helped me to learn a lot fast.

But I've only just started going out regularly as I realised i'm mad not to take advantage of a property that I have access to close by with rabbits and fallow in the hills.
Keen to be offsetting the food costs and maybe make a few nice pelts

I'm looking forward to engaging in the forums to learn about what gun I should be saving up for and how to interpret all the calibres...

Get a 22/250 i used it on a guided block for fallow, didn't damage any meat compared to the 270

Thanks, It’s a good learning curve getting familiar with all the possible calibres but I’m getting a hang of how to compare them for the country i get to. I haven’t been looking at any 22/250s yet but will now.

You live in a neat part of NZ, and with fallow deer around id choose a Tikka T3 rifle in .243 calibre.

The newer Tikka have a 8 twist barrel. load it with any ammo that uses Sierra Gamekings projectiles and you will have a long successful hunting career


Don’t be tempted to overscope such a light rifle, a Leupold VX-3HD in 3.5-10 x 40 is ample.

While not the cheapest options you have available this is a setup you could use for a lifetime and be completely happy with it

Buy once and cry once, you'll save money in the long run.

6ARC/6.5 Grendel would be another good option for fallow, its a Shame Tikka don't make them
