    7mm rem mag short barrel

Hey, pretty keen to take down my 7mm rem mag barrel from 24" to about 20". Is only a cheap Mossberg 4x4 and I just want it as a close-mid range sorta rifle for reds and the odd fallow that gets in the way. Just wondering what kinda velocity I could expect to lose, and any accuracy loss? Also what kinda projectiles do the best job with the 7mm under 100m or so?

I believe you loose about 35fps per inch.
at close range maybe try a cor-loc or something with stout construction.

The partition is certainly a nice and effective bullet, but comes at the high end of the price market. Not a problem if only shooting a few.

7mm mag seems a bit of overkill for a close range rifle! But maybe thats just me. You shouldn't lose accuracy, just velocity (others can advise how much) and gain some extra noise and muzzle blast.

I got it too cheap to pass up, and already have a more than satisfactory lr rig. Im just quizzing at this stage. May just pass it on yet

That would probably be the best option.

no such thing as over gunned, just choose the right projectile.

What scoped said, with that length barrel on a 7mm Rem Mag, you are wasting the expensive ammo (and powder if you hand load) and would be better off with a 7mm-08.

I have some 7mm 154 SST I bought to try in my 7-08, you are welcome to try a few of those. I bought them for shortish range shooting.

re shortening the barrel....I was tempted to do it to my tikka Rem mag, but ended up swapping it for a tikka 7-08. I was going to try a lot faster powders than the 2217 I was using, to try and keep velocity up. A light pill in a short barrel should still travel ok for 2-300m
If you find yourself in a fair fight....your tactics suck

The 7mm mag 20 inch I played with would do about 2900fps with the 162 Amax.

Its not a target rifle and it wont get hundreds of rounds through it so I don't mind spending $2 a round if its going to do what I want. Hell might even chop it down to 18 just for shits
