Thread: Longer range projectile for Tikka 22-250?

I use 55gr Noslar Ballistic tips in my 250 @ 3600 fps , they work well on most animals, have shot goats at 300 yds, and quite a few fallow deer mostly body shot with that load. My wife has shot a couple of fallow with that load and both went down pretty quick. Turns rabbits into mush! Another bullet I like in the 22-250 and more so in the 223 is the 55 gr Hornady W/C, seems to work really well in the 223 at 3070 fps (20 inch Barrel) on deer and goats as well as small game. My wife also shot a young whitetail buck in Canada with my son's 22-250 a few years back using the 53gr Barnes XLC, that buck took two steps and dropped with a shoulder shot, that bullet isn't available now but the TSX should work as good.

Went with the 50grain V-Max - will work up a load and see how they go. Ended up putting a 3-15 Zeiss on the rifle so will try and stretch its legs a bit.

Yeah, that should be sweet but grab some 53 grain pills too.... Nice bc for the longer ranges.

My fav in my 22-250 has to be the Sierra 55g SBT, love knocking over goats and fallow out past 200m, have got the HPBT as well, critters don't tend to get up...

Im finding the 50grain very accurate shot peacocks out to 400 this weekend, but they are pretty useless up close on goats. I think they are exploding on impact.

Are you finding the 53 grain works well out further? I think that these would probably perform better further out once they have slowed down a bit.

Have you shot anything up close with them? Perform well? Maybe I should try the 52 grain amax. They might be a little stouter for the occasional closer shot. Or just carry a few soft points too.

I like the Sierra soft points as well. I feel like the 250 suits a one size fits all. It's never going to be a super long range caliber so a basic and accurate bullet with good results on larger game is perfect. No messing about. Deer at 40-250. Goats to 300 or rabbits to 400 you have a do all at a very economic rate.

I never went to a varmint projectile because no varmint ever cared haha I was more interested in large game performance and made it work on everything else

I reckon that's about right - im just wanting to push it out on the peacocks. I might try a harder projectile and see if I can get similar accuracy. If im gunna shoot a deer with it at the moment ill just stalk with a soft point up the spout. Got These vmax are really for lying down on a hill and testing my accuracy - the fact that they can cut wind well helps with the longer shots on small targets.

Might load up some Norma soft points or Sierra BTs maybe. The Sierras must be harder than the Vmax surely.
