ACR as suggested have a slightly more conservative approach to battery longevity - but use the same chemistry as the other brands. Slightly bulkier than some other brands, but very good (if not excellent) reliability. I have one here that recently expired, and I never got back to the NZ rescue center to confirm the registration so I need to get it serviced a go forwards from there...

I have a KTI one nice and compact, battery is slated to run out in 2026 so 4 years before I need to think about a replacement, cost and the 10 year battery were what made me choose it at the time.

A friend of mine is in the Eagle Helicopter. He said flicking the flint on a Bic lighter at night is as good as a flare with the night vision gear they have. He said it shows up as a huge flash that looks like something blew up. If you need help and hear the helicopter he said just start flicking it. They nearly always see it first go even with bush cover.

Yeah, I can confirm they really don't like the LED safety beacons on the roof of the airport safety utes. The flash takes out half the airport's apron for them I'm told!

Whatever you decide, shop around before buying, there can be a $100 difference between shops.
The marine shops like Smart Marine and Burnsco are always worth checking, they often have at least one of the options on special.

Too late now but I got my Rescue Me through lusty & Blundell.
Went that way as I liked the small size, can go in a shirt pocket or currently on a belt. ( not recommended for heavy duty Bush bashing as the supplied case is not that robust)
Just booked it for a new battery as it ran out 6 maths back.
In my mind the main fault of the Rescue Me is also its small size which means it won't float unless its in its supplied case.

You do not need a NZ registered PLB, they work anywhere in the world. It is desirable to have a NZ registered one but not necessary. I know of a person who went on a extended Kayak trip in Canada and purchased a PLB while there and registered it in Canada. On returning home he contacted the register here to register his PLB and spoke to a very helpful lady. She said to just register your new address in NZ to the Canadian register and let them know your now in NZ. In the event of a activation there will be a delay in things happening but its minutes not hours.
Having said all that skippersmate.co.nz is the place with sharp prices
