Don't most people fish for a few years before they catch a salmon in Canterbury waters?
I have never fished them, but believe they will happily swim past a nice hook and set up for the hell of it

I would suggest a father off spring bonding session of making black powder and toilet role tubes wrapped with solid stuff (or maybe steel pipe etc) and fuses made from aquarium tube etc..... then salmon float to the top....

    Just a thought.....

You are an enterprising young fellah Beaker, I'll give you that.

Least you gave it a try VC. If you and your boy come back to the North Island at any stage I reckon @bomber and I could hook him up on a trout.

I call bullshit on the floating dead fish with explosives The ones I have seen have all sunk.

No they hadn't caught anything and were using lures in all the ponds when they are only to be used in one of them, that much weed I would have thought a lure would be a complete waste of time....it was bad enough with the float rig.

Having been down to the ponds on tonights dog walk I have to say I don't think "you" were the reason you caught no fish.

The ponds are very low, full of weed and the water temp is rather warm. Very early morning or very late evening you might have a small chance. No one fishing tonight had caught anything either.

Hope that makes you feel better!!
All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

When I did it with gadgette#3 down here a couple of years ago we used shrimp on the hook (about the same size hook as shrimp) and a clear float half filled with water so yo had some weight. Seemed to work. I could hear the excitement from the other side of the pond when she finally hooked up. I spent most of my time untangling lines, baiting hooks and netting fish for the rest of the school mates.

Righto got out there this morning and could see a school circleing.
With no wind on the water I could see them come and look at the bait and shy away from it.
I thought mabey the red hook or the trace was putting them off so I went to tie a longer trace but could only find a bigger red hook.
Made it about twice as long so closer to the bottom and out of the light a bit more and boom we were on

I think the larger more circle style hook made all the difference as we had plenty of takes last time but zero hook ups.
