Thread: Virtual private networks

Maybe slightly off topic but probably the appropriate place to put this question ?

VPN...Virtual private networks. Yes there is plenty of information on the web but who uses them on here for various reasons like privacy / security / scamming prevention reasons? A technical friend of mind is interested in VPN but is it justified to get a VPN service?

Slightly off topic....I sure get tired of scam phone calls.....How do you stop getting unwanted messages.....I seemed to be on a telephone calling list?

VPN is great. especially when you want to view overseas things like netflix usa, there is 2-3 times more content than netflix nz

A mate of mine who is a geek from the socks up swears by Express VPN, and says Nord VPN is also pretty good.

Also keep in mind that whenever something is "free" your data is what pays for it so it's worth being suspicious. I would be willing to bet this is how you have got onto the spam list, quite often it will be a competition where you enter to win something but what they're really doing is collecting marketing information to sell to data brokers and they just bet on the fact that most people don't read the terms and conditions.

Also here's a small trick you can use when signing up to new services that will allow you to see if a company has sold your data provided you're using a gmail address, so as an example say you are signing up for an account with Facebook and it asks you for an email address, you would type yournormalemailhere+Facebook@gmail.com you just add the +"example" before the @gmail.com it can be whatever you like. You will still receive emails to your normal address but the recipient part of the email will reflect the ones you give out when you sign up to each service.

i use nord vpn. you need to have a current netflix (nz) account then set up your router with the downloaded vpn, some tv's are real bastards with it so get an aftermarket $70 android box that comes with a mini keypad, install your vpn on it and netflix. attach the hdmi lead to your tv and the world is yours (insert evil laugh here).
netflix uk is kinda good too. even youtube etc is different depending on where your vpn is set too
