162 amax loads to 162 eldx

I usually use 162 amax and 53.5 grains of 2209 in my .284. I was thinking of swapping the projectiles and trying the eldx, has anyone done this; and is there any tips or advice that you think might be useful?

I have plenty of amax, but have a box of 162 eldx and thought I’d give them a a whirl after the 150s performed so well in my other .284.

    Cheers.

You may have to back your powder charge off a tad going from the Amax/eldm to the eldx, due to the heavier jacket/base construction.

You may be lucky and have the same point of impact with both, you will need to check it out first to make sure.

and that my friends is the one advantage of not being at top pressure normally and being a bit below it....swapping same weight projectile wont push you over the limit.
2 at 1.5 grn below,2 at 1 grn below...2 at .5grns below and 2 normal load....go shoot them in that order and see what they feel like...NOTHING else will be 100% certain to tell you.

...and what many others have found. It's fairly well known the eld-x creates higher pressure than most other projectiles at the same powder charge.

Yeah you'll need to back it off quite a bit.

It's a different bullet, I think that's all that needs saying really.

I made this change a couple years ago from the ELD-M to ELD-X and dropped back about 3 grains in the end. That was after starting new load development. Rifle is a 7mm rem mag.

What @Cigar says is right on the money, they generate pressure much quicker than other softer bullets and have a much thicker jacket then the ELD-M/Amax.
