165gr gamehead pro 308. Speed verification.

Hi all, dose any one have any speeds verified for the sako 165gr ammo 308. Particularly I'm a 20" barrel t3x?. Iv done bullet drop verification and it recons it's going 2430fps. That just sounds too slow as the box states 2670fps even with the short barrel I should be around the 2550ish. Unless the bc is not as stated which would increase speed, recoil is like shooting a 7m08 which is nice, but the wound channel is small so not alot of blood trail left. I wonder if it's going too slow to expand enough, they generally punch right through. Iv killed atleast 20 reds with them but when they run into thick bush there's nit much of a blood trail.

Welcome to the forum. I haven't used that particular Sako load in my rifles but we usually put a chrony beside any shooter sighting in at the range where I RO, and I do recall that a couple of guys have been very surprised by the low velocities from Sako 308 ammo. So it's entire,y possible it's only loafing along at something under 2500 fps.

In addition unless you are firing a decent sample size (10+ rounds) at each distance, your measurement of drop to "correct" the velocity can be out by quite a bit.

    Cheers

A lot of the manufacturers are being a little untruthful with their velocities due to them not being able to get the preferred powders that they had previously developed.

But not to worry. All you're deer are gonna die all the same.

I never had any lower than expected readings on .308 123-150gn GH and pro out of a T3x.
150 Gamehead box (24”) was 2854, I chronied 2664 with 16” barrel which is pretty accurate for chop.

Yes , well I say it's going that speed because iv shot targets out to 450y and I'm pretty much bang on so the only thing would increase the speed in the ballistic app would be the bc. I see sako now have a gamehead pro in 150gr that might be the go, just hate changing ammo

Interesting I'd love to put it over a chrony

If you change point of aim on animal you will see different results even if speed is lower than ideal. Bring shot forward a bit and break shoulder bones, forward a bit more and your into vital bits of the neck...

Agreed I'm definitely a forward of the shoulder kind of shooter, shot one the other day not quite through the shoulder blade bone just abit lower and blood trail was just a couple drops here and there, had a dog that found it 30m. In saying that all deer the iv done shit shots on and have found still die so the bullet still works fine.just have to be mindfull of make an extra good shot when there's thick cover around, that's what iv learnt after taking some not so vital shits

I'd love to know the same through a Tikka 16" barrel. In my limited experience, this ammo kills, but not as well as some other types. Damn accurate though.

Gamehead pro 150 was 2774fps down a 20” before they stopped bringing it in to the country and barrel got cut down.

I think the sako is a 1/10 twist rate as a pose to tikka 1/11 maybe that's the extra 70fps I recon mine is somewhere around 2500fps, not actually sure if that twist rate speeds things up.

Looks like they’ve started again. I loved them and they were cheap. Then they axed the 123 and 150 but had heaps of the 165 in stock to clear. I went to Gamehead as it had similar velocity but wanted ballistic tip so now over to reload sst. If I need brass again I’ll buy the pro 150’s…
