    22 ammo test fun

So a couple of guys at the range this arvo were comparing notes on 22 ammo, and were a bit surprised at how it varied. By chance I had the two ammos they were comparing here and since it was such a lovely evening I decided a little test might be fun.

So 48M (my wife insisted I shift the shooting table along the deck a bit) with a Remington 541-T (stock) , a Remington 581- tricked out a bit) a Winchester 320 (the Jack Warne of Kimber fame designed one) and a Lithgow LA101 (stock). All these rifles have very good to excellent triggers and all are proven 0.5" rifles with several ammo's. All 10 round groups.

    Here is the target:

    And a table of results:

    Norma Tac-22 Eley Club
Rifle Group Velocity SD Group Velocity SD
    Remmy 541-T 0.91 1049 8.7 1.04 1078 6.9
    Remmy 581 1.08 1055 13.2 0.69 1107 14.9
    Winny 320 0.54 1051. 10.0 huge 1089 11.0
    LA101 0.59 1057 13.7 0.45 1087 4.1

I find these sorts of tests fascinating for their lack of consistency. The 541-t hated both but had a good SD with Club, the 581 shot a good group with the Club but worst SD, the 320 shot the best group with the Tac-22 but couldn't keep the Club on the same page, but the LA101 shot the Club into the best group of the evening with a fantastic SD

I'm glad I bought that Winchester off you, it's a lovely accurate rifle.
It's not all of them, but it's always them.

Almost every .22 will have a brand of ammo that brings out the best in accuracy- it's up to you to discover which one it is. Even 2 rifles of the same brand may have different preferences.

What's more interesting is even different batches of the same ammo can have vastly different accuracy.
