Does anyone have any starting points for a subsonic 223 load with available powders (not trailboss)?
Is developing subsonic loads in centrefire cases dangerous or a dumb idea?
Keen to hear any thoughts,
Cheers

Not trailboss....hmmm yeah it's doable with fast shotgun powders. But you are turning rifle into 22lr ....fwiw 5 grns trailboss under 55 GRN is a published load. There are threads on internet with guys using shotgun powders.similar amounts...go surfing lol.
Only because trailboss seems to be impossible to acquire for as long as I have been looking recently. Yes, I have a 223 with a thermal scope all set up and just want to bowl the odd possum quietly while close to friends parents farmhouse. Not enough to bother changing to a 22. Cheers will have a look into shotgun powders
Subsonics in centrefire rifles can and do work. Just bear in mind that 223 subs are only marginally better than 22 rimfire subs. I use them around residential areas at times when doing pest control. Goats etc you need to be a proficient shot or you can look forward to wounding a few animals. Red dot, green dot,AS50N powders all work in 223. There’s a thread on here somewhere on the subject.
Shotgun powder.

Lol. Took about 10 minutes to find it.
7.6gr AS50N behind a 55gr hunting bullet will result in abt 1900fps. I use it for foxes on small blocks.
So, abt 3gr makes sense.
Just be very carefull to avoid double charges.
P.S. almost any shotgun or pistol powder will work.
Sometimes it's easier to do a google search, they often link back to this forum lol.
Its bloody grim out there for pistol powders in chch at the moment. There is some CFE Pistol around. Its a bit slower than the likes of red dot, trailboss etc but a bit faster than blue dot (which some on the interwebs have used). Also some lil gun but that’s slower still. Hopefully CFE Pistol will work. Can try around 6gr perhaps and work down.
Titegroup lists a 223 load that I've used with Hornady 55gr soft points.
I use them for camp raiding possums and they do the trick, especially if you put the projectile in backwards.
I have experimented with a case drilled out for a shotgun primer and .22 pellet and while it works, it's a lot of raffing about.
