    284 win loads.

Hey guys, I realise this topics been fairly well covered but I’m in the process of putting together a 284 win using a t3x action. It’s seems like the easy button as far as action length and loading 162s and the likes out further. The existing rifle is chambered in 308 so I’ll need to file the bolt stop and get a couple of the longer 270 mags. The new barrel is a proof carbon sendero light 20”. I’ll be using lapua brass. My question is will 2700fps be obtainable with a 175gr eldx? And reloder 26 is out of the question obviously. Don’t want to start using a powder that’s almost unobtainable. For me anyway. Any help or a point in the right direction is appreciated.

2209 will get you close or r17 will get more or try Superformance

I don't think that's quite doable without Reloder 26 or some other double based powder, unless you are going to lean on it harder than you should.

    I got 2600 with a 180 ELD from a 20" barrel using AR2213SC. It was a max load.

Why not go Saum I think you will struggle with the 284 and those speeds

My ultimate rifle one day is a full custom 7 saum. But right now I’ve got an itch that needs scratched and new things are fun. The 284 win has been on the to do list for a few years now to.

If throated to optimize for the 175 I think 2700 is only doable with RL26. 2600-2650 would be realistic with powders like 2209,RL17, RL16, Superformance type stuff.

However it would be very important to work up from well below max.

Cheers. Was hoping for somewhere around 2650. Still carrying around 1000ft lb and 1600fps at 900 yards which is plenty enough for what I want to use it for.

Trying to source RE17 & RE26 is near impossible especially RE17 as I’m down to my last bit.

I have some Hodgedon Superformance to try out as that’s not far behind RE17 for the .284

    AR2209 is a third contender

I’m getting 2680 fps with 180 ELDMS & a very mild load of RL26 and 22in bbl 284. It’s very accurate so I don’t need to burn more powder & holds 1800 fps at 900yds. Based on my experience with several 284s other powders definitely won’t get you RL26 performance. As others have stated RL17 is a good (next best) alternative but you’ll loose 50-70 fps. Superformance is next best but you won’t get quite as much speed as RL17, perhaps a drop of 30 fps? And a further speed drop with 2209. I haven’t tried but Staball 6.5 might be worth a try

Thanks for the info guys, all good stuff. I’m not looking at flogging the guts out of it. Just a good accurate load so if I can’t find any rl17 or Superformance I’ll give 2209 a crack. Excited to do some testing when it’s all done.

Hodgdon Superperformance powder should be easy to find, about $95 per tin

it would be much easier to achieve with a 22" or longer barrel! How long will you be able to load? 3.3" COAL? 2600 fps definitely looks doable, 2650 fps will be pushing it. Just a bit short to get the best from 2213SC by the looks.

First up, figure out what powders you can actually get.

punching some numbers into GRT, looks like 2209, IMR 4831, Win 760, Superformance, all options

From my 20" with lapua brass I'm getting 2750fps with superformance with a 162gr eld m. Personal preference etc but my question to the OP is why the 175gr eld X ?

Keep it simple- hand me a model 7 7mm08 and I'll be right

I was just wondering is all. More so the bullet weight than the eldx specifically. I’d rather shoot an eldm at those speeds they perform a lot better. I get that you’re not gaining much from the 175 over say the 162. Around 100ftlb at 900. I’ll probably stay in the 160 class. Cheers for the info. Brass turned up today and made up a couple dummy rounds using what I have here. 162gr eldx and 175gr eldx. Can’t remember but was about 3.1” and 3.25” coal. They’re a good looking round.
