Thread: 6.5 x 55 alternative powder to Vihtavuori N560

Hi team,

The present load for my Tikka 6.5 x 55 is: Sellier & Bellot brass, Federal large primers, 49gr Vihtavuori N560, 143gr Eld-x. I am very happy with the performance (2770 fps) - very accurate and reliable. BUT... I am now starting to run low on N560 Does anyone out there have a recipe using a more mainstream/accessible powder.

I have looked up some online charts, but hoping to hear from someone who is reloading 6.5 x 55's with a different powder and who is happy with it.

44 Gr 2209 - around 2700 fps

I too am using 49gr of N560, not quite getting that speed but it is a hot load!
Reloader 22 is a performer in 6.5x55 but is rare as N560 atm
AR2209 works well too, has a similar but slightly slower burn rate to N560

Reloader 22. Not high speeds 2,550 but insane accuracy and hitting power with 143gr Eld-X.

Reloader 22 works for me too, not fast but accurate with partition 140

Hybrid 100 V

H4350 or Win760 is also in the ballpark if you can’t find any 2209.

Hodgdon superprofrmance should be good as well

Know doubt 2209 works, but burn rate of N560 is slower than 2209, much more like 2213SC and a Superformance and RL22

IMR4831 is a good alternative. Almost up there with N560. There might be some kicking around on people's shelves.

Not a lot between R22 or IMR4831 and I got close to 2800 with both. 140 grn projectiles

I also used W760 with 120 NBT and got close to 3k.

I've found 2213sc to be more accurate than 2209. 140gr eld-m at 2713fps in a 23" barrel with 2213sc.
