If I were doing a short action 7mm it'd be a 7mm-6.5PRC.
Hornady and Lapua brass being the main reasons, just size up neck with a mandrel and away you go.

All the short magnum 7mms are better suited for use in a short action due to the shorter case length.
In a long action they are good for an additional 150-200fps.

The 284win is a very good catridge, very efficient for the powder it burns but it doesn't keep up with the magnums (which burn 10gr more powder per shot).

@Beetroot I run 62gns or powder surely the .284 is burning more than 52gns? @GWH was over 60gns with 162s from memory I suspect the 7-6.5prc is a wild cat formed from no more than lack of 7Saum brass in the USA

10gr +/-. Depending on what powder you are using the charge weight can vary a lot.
Powders like Superformance tend to fill a case more than the likes of 2209.

I'm running 55.5gr 2209 behind a 162. Hard bolt lifts start around 56gr for my rifle.

If you overlay the 7mm SAUM and 7-6.5PRC cases they are almost identical. I'm sure there are small differences, but to me they are essentially the same thing.

Iv not played with 2209 but im pretty sure its late 50s in the saum but @Beetroot is correct really the saums just about 10gns behind most magnums

Hornady brass is junk and ADG goes as good as lapua be intrested to see the 7mm velocity though cant imagen itll anything flash

7-6.5PRC is becoming very popular in F-Class circles….2950fps with 180 Hybrids comfortably with 30” barrel and without needing to push it hard. Achieves 284 Shehane performance without trashing brass.

Thats a blimen long barrel would it be fair to then deduct 30fps per inch from 30" to 20" and assume a loss of 300fps so 2650fps? Even at 20fps per inch 2750fps. Is the shehan an improved 284win?

Shehane isn’t AI ‘improved’. Just has less body taper compared to standard 284W and increases powder capacity by about 3grains or so. 7-6.5PRC has similar capacity, but just does the same job easier.

Hornady brass is the best "cheap" brass IMO.
I like using it when loosing brass is a possibility, as I hate loosing expensive brass.

Fair I loose alot of brass but wont endure Hornady I prefer Winchester if not ADG or Lapua dont like Norma either i have used limited Sako but seems good I try my best but still loose cases, my reference is the same powder
