Thread: Day at the range

Met up with @Beavis today to pick up my marlin model 60 .22 and did some reloading while I was there on Beavis's gear a big thanks for that mate, ended up using some hornady 130gr interlocks that beavis dug up for me will still be trying the prohunters at a later stage that you sent me munsey i just needed to be able to try from minimum to max load with the H4350 to get a better chance of finding that accuracy node. Everything was set up on a lee o frame press with lee dies case stretch was compared between a loaded factory round and a fired case from the batch of factory ammo to find out what the headspacing was like and was only a 3 to 4 thou case stretch which indicated I had a fairly tight chamber in the remmy and we had the cases resized and shoulder bumped back 1 thou.

Started at 51.0 and finished at 54.0 grains of H4350 (AR2209) seemed all of my accuracy was between 51 and 51.5 everything started to open back up above that, These are for hunting only and maybe the odd gong shooting session for shit and giggles either way I am happy with what I achieved today, remington factory and federal fusion ammo shoot like shit in my rifle. Shame about the cold clean barrel flyer on the first lot of loads

Federal brass
Federal 210 primers
Hornady 130gr interlock flat base

Yeah pete I actually used to reload a while back my first time back into reloading since 2012, going to be picking up a lee breechlock o frame press at some stage as I am only going to make hunting ammo so do not need anything fancy and I am buying the dies I used from beavis which is the lee deluxe die set which are set up to the lee breechlock press so should not be any mucking around setting the dies up when I get my press.

That was the most accurate load I could get by time I got to 54 grains the load started getting a little bit warm and cratering the primers (no sticky bolt lift though) hopefully that 51.5gr load should be getting me around 2900 FPS out of the 24 inch barrel on my remmy but will be running them over a chrony when i can make up a batch of ammo to get an actual velocity.

@kiwi39 if you saw what I was like when I first started reloading I was at the tokoroa range damn near every day shooting targets and trying to find that ultimate optimum charge weight, yeah I like the Taupo range and yes I was shooting on the 100 meter mound, for now I just wanted a decent hunting load that can get me from 20 out to 300 meters (even though I do not shoot out past 200 anyway) will work on the load a bit more at a later date but for now 51.5gr will be the ticket to drop a few animals.

What do you intend to do to rectify this?...I imagine on a range you can fire one at the sky to get it warm and dirty, but when shooting at an animal I can assure you that you wont be quick enough to crack off two shots.

The flyer was either one of two things it may have been the cold clean barrel thing or I may have even pulled the shot as the trigger is quite heavy and could do with adjusting, I will be making up some ammo and I will be trying them at the range again after adjusting the pull weight of the trigger to see if it does do it again if it does I may have to look into a bedding job or getting the barrel free floated.

You need to get away from that "cold & clean" or you will stuff up every first shot you ever take. Every time you take your rifle from the gun safe it will be "cold & clean". Your flyer could be one of several reasons, from pulling the trigger instead of squeezing it to not having the rifle set to your shoulder right...sometimes it takes that first kick to realize you are not ready.
I wouldn't bother doing any fancy stuff to your rifle as it was made by a reputable manufacturer albeit mounted in a cheap plastic stock...as they say, 'you wont make a silk purse out of a sows ear'...if it is shooting three into a 50mm circle at 100 from a benchrest and three into a 300mm square at 100 from standing, unsupported you will smack anything over in the bush. If you want a range gun then I would suggest you save your pennies and buy a bit at a time a rifle suited for the purpose.
As for saying some ammo is crap in your rifle...get someone else to have a crack with your rifle with that same ammo.

Definitely not after a range rifle Spook it is purely for hunting and nothing else (well maybe the occasional forum gong shoot for a few giggles), you have made some good points regarding positioning on the shoulder etc and are points that I will take onboard sunday was the first real opportunity I had to get some decent trigger time with it to get a feel for the rifle but that bloody trigger is going to get some pull weight taken off it which I do not have to take it out of the stock to do as it is externally adjustable.

If you thought you had the odd flyer before, wait till you start playing with that trigger. Do you have a gauge?...or are you just going to screw it out till it goes pop when you take a deep breath...why gun manufactures make these things readily accessible is beyond me.
After resetting it make sure you do the ol'bump test to see if it is set too light...I prefer to see this done with a live round up the spout in the living room of the house...sure as hell stops further tu tuing in the future.

Yes I do have a gauge and I have adjusted triggers before so I do know what I am doing I do not do stupid things especially with firearms !!!!!. all I am going to do is take it down to 2.5 pound pull instead of the 3.5 pound pull it already has heck even the trigger on my marlin model 60 .22 is lighter than my .270.
