Loads for .223 using Barnes 62gn TSX and AR2206H Powder

    HI

I have recently bought a flash Schultz and Larsen .223 bolt action with 1 in 8 twist ( looking forward to trying it out on some fallow deer) , I have also purchased some Barnes 62gn TSX and some AR 2206H powder (I also have lots of AR2208 for my 7mm- 08, and some BM1 if that is a workable alternative).

I am trying to find a load for the Barnes and AR2206H powder. can anyone share their experience here?

I couldn't find a loading on the ADI site for the Barnes 62gn TSX or on the Barnes site for the ADI 2206H powder ( not surprising as one is US based and the other Australian)

My copy of Nick Harvey's book is a few years old so it doesn't feature the Barnes 62gn.

    Thanks

    Vince

Do any of your reloading data resources have a listing for that projectile using H4895? Its the same powder as AR2206H

    Hi

Thanks for that info, much appreciated, I had read and seen most of it, intreresting to see in the ADI reloading website lists 23 gn max for Swift Scirocco projectiles and yet also ADI lists greater powder loads for projectiles heavier than 62 gn can take more gn of powder than the Barnes, I guess the Barnes must be a lot harder pill than the heavier and more frangilble ones, another reason might be that being made of all copper ( a metal lighter than lead) the Barnes will be a longer pill, the bearing surface thus being greater than a laead pill of the same weight thus more friction / resistance to pressure as it makes its way down the Barrell and therefor higher pressures ?

Ihave read that although the tables say H4895 IS the same as 2206H , there are slight differences that can cause problems, I am not brave enough to try 25gn straight off !

I will load a couple at 23.5 gn , 24 gn and 24.5 and see how that goes.

    Your advice is much appreciated

The relief grooves in the Barnes seem to counter the long bearing surface. I use standard loads. I've pushed the 62 grn Barnes past 25 grns 2206H safely.

Im using 25.1 grns AR2206h behind the 50grn TTSX and really rate it highly,if you go lighter/faster you should get even better results than I am as your fast twist SHOULD help with opening up the petals for expansion.

    I use the 62gr scirocco with a lot more than 23 grns😆
No pressure signs doing 3200 ish from a 23" barrel.
    Never tried the Barnes.

My load for the 62gr TSX Barnes is 25.5gr 2206H @ 2939 fps for a 20" barrel, bullet seated to fit magazine in a Tikka T3
Also use in same rifle 65gr Serria with 25gr 2206H for 2969 fps.
I remember reading somewhere when loading for the 62gr Barnes just use the 63gr 2206H loading info on the ADI guide.

Thanks for all that info , I think I will head straigth to a 24.5gn load AR2206H. it is a very modern rifle ( new and as yet unfired) with a similar 3 lug bolt head set up to Sako , very strong I would think.

I am surprised the ADI load max is so low at 23gn 2206H whilst the Barnes load max for H4895 (same powder as 2206H) is 24.5 gn will check the ADI load for 63 gn projectile

Will report on results, your help and advice much appreciated. Pretty excited about trying out the new Schultz .223 Bang stick.

I have three boxes of unopend Barnes 7mm ( .284) 120gn TTSX for sale if anyone is interested, happy to let them go at a good price - 50 projectiles per box.

I use these in my AR and am happy with them. You want to be near max load with a 223 given the small case and mag length restrictions. I would load up the max, half a grain under that and then another lot a full grain under max. Go to the range, work your way up and if any of those loads give reasonable groups thats your load. If they are all about the same use the max load cos fast is good.

Run the 62gr Barnes in a 223WSSM using 45gr 2209. Mark Corlett used to be a great fan of this rig and load. Got me onto it. Load 55gr Barnes in my mates Browning using 25gr BM2.Robot reliable. He got a huge fat Gizzie hind last night with it out mob of 8.Trying 53gr Barnes in T3 8 twist this weekend using 26gr BM2.
