Tis just fine to check your brass this way
You could even see this timeless creed

    Excellent !

These got fired today and it is very obvious now that there is a fracture above the band.

Some Rem/Win mag chambers are big in the diameter just above the belt, like really big & you will get another belt forming when you size it or try to

Sometimes you can't even size it back enough to fit into another different brand of rifle

Combine that with a long shoulder/short brass & here comes head separation pretty quickly

If the first firing stretches the brass enough you are in trouble no matter how little you bump the shoulder in subsequent firings

Rem/Win mag "match" reamers are small in the diameter above the belt & it makes a difference
I've bought a lot of brass over the years, both new and once, twice, three times fired. I happily buy used if I'm satisfied it has decent remaining life. The vast mjority of times I've been very satisfied and the savings over new brass went into more powders and projectiles.
But admittedly I was also caught out a couple of times and bought bad brass. Some people are just dishonest unfortunately. So Greg has a point. If you are not sure you can get decent used brass, buy new and then you know.

    Greetings All,
Reading about all the trouble people are having with head separations and short case life in the 7mm Rem mag I wondered why it is so popular. When I visit my local bang stick emporium I sometimes ask "what is hot at the moment?" Last time the answer included the 7mm Rem mag and I started wondering what the alternatives were. The 7mm Rem SAUM and the 7mm WSM seem to have been and gone in factory rifles, perhaps the 280 AI as well. Only the 7mm-08 and the recent 7mm PRC seem to be chambered for more than a few rifles. Any thoughts?
    regards Grandpamac.
