Could I run a standard 30 cal bullet as a first shot in my 30-30 as a reload?or does it need to be 30-30 specific pill?thinking a 150g sst as first in the spout if a longer range shot presented itself?thanks

You can use any 30 cal bullet, just not stacked in the tube. Have heard of some guys running them as a two shot - 1 in the chamber, 1 in the mag. Which is probably fine for Bush hunting but takes away the point of having a lever action.
I think that leverloution stuff or whatever it's called with the plastic tips goes a bit better on the longer shots. Unless of course you want to run reloadsI must say I don't like the idea of hard pointy tips up the jacksey of the round in front in the tube mag.
Nah just as first shot in the barrel if long shot present itself, flat or round nose in the mag..think I might give a sst a go ..wasn’t sure if 30-30 was loadable with the sst though..
No issues at all....IF you can get it back out of chamber if not fired lol. The soft Speer projectiles would be a good choice...the 130hp has always been good. The 125grn nbt went well in wee x39 so would be better still for you.
75/15/10 black powder matters
You can load spitzer bullets, one in the chamber and first one in the mag, so you get two shots. Your problem is that the pointy bullets will shoot to a different place than your normal flat nose bullets, unless you are lucky.
The Hornady Leverrevolution bullets with rubber pointed tips are really a bit of a con I reckon, they make no real difference to the trajectory of a .30-30. It's still a 200 metres cartridge either way, but that ammo is so much more expensive...
Look, the ammo manufacturers have been designing and making bullets to suit the .30-30 since 1895. They have got it down pat. Just shoot some 150 grain FN Powerpoints or some 150 grain Hornady RN or 170grain (Sierra or Hornady) - what ever you can get - they will as well as anything and just as well or better than 150 grain SST's.
Not a lot of point in pointy bullets with a rifle which as John says is really a 200 yd jobbie, the difference in poi assuming similar velocity will be within shooter error.
having used a 3030 a bit agree with Marty Henry what gain???? only so much grunt in a 3030
The other thing is pointy bullets generally need more velocity than the 3030 can provide to expand reliably. 3030 bullets are designed for "low speed"
Get some Sierra FN #2000 and throw 28.5grains of BM2 in the case and go hunt man![]()
you could try the lapua omega. a bit expensive but would do the business
hornady leverlotution, same power as 30/30 but balistically better
