Quality control.....they are military projectiles made in haste to keep the troops supplied.the rifles and machine guns they were made to feed had a lot of variables in manufacturing so the ammunition was made to go bang and chuck lead....it didn't need to do anything else, your dealing with something mass produced to loose tolerances...if you want precision BUY PRECISION.... You wouldn't expect to race competitively in formula One if driving a Toyota corolla or a Lada niva.....which is pretty much what your asking....

"some are measuring as low as .309 and are giving me problems, others are as large as .313 and are seating fine."

A bit more bang is better.

Agree. But given he only wants them for plinking use them. Some glues do wonders.

IDK, there seem to be a number of people hung up about using these on the range and are using them, I think mostly because its the original MK7 spec with the flat base, etc, i can understand that quality control was likely poor during the war, but would have thought it would have caused similar problems in their machines in the factory would it not?
They all still seem to weigh 174 grains anyhow.
I need to establish how bad it is with these anyway, so will measure a few more going forward. Have been told that CAC was the worst.

Probably easier if i put them through the crimping die if its a problem, they will never shift after that.

If you are driving a mini,a smaller than usual car park is not an issue.if your driving a falcon station wagon ,you won't get into same carpark..... If your machinery is set up this week, month, year to run with this batch of projectiles of X size and runs that X size for however long..you will adjust accordingly..remember the old cordite loads were a straight case( think .410 shotgun) cordite packed in,sized down to whatever spec, then projectile seated, some crimped this way, others like that..... The next batch of gozillian projectiles might be slightly different,so adjustment made for that run....or indeed that different batch might be from completely different line, loaded on different continent....or be Monday morning jobbies. I've seen rifles ,brand new forsale here in NZ,with no spiral thingies inside the tube....yet company............X......... Still had them for sale( norinco 7.62x39mm about 20 years back) so there are at times oddities that make it out the factory door..... Many years later,if you happen to get hold of said oddity, you could well be scratching your head thinking WTF????

Yes sure, it was probably a thing they had to deal with.
Probably explains why some shooters prefer shooting certain years on the headstamp.
Anyway I measured a few and most are .311 that ive got in this bunch, have another bag to go through of the copper type which will be interesting.
Out of about 15 of the things, 3 measure .308, one is .309, another one is .312 and the rest are .311 - .3115 which is good.
Looks like it was a mix of things giving me the trouble, as i was having issues with ones measuring .311 prior, but turns out there are some that are smaller which is good to be aware of.

    Correct sizing die?

Is it a compressed powder load?

But guessing you checked most of above.
