Thread: Shotshells without a dedicated press

Hey all,

I've been toying with the idea of loading my own shells and maybe trying out some mixed shot loads. Being the tight ass that I am, I'm not all that keen on forking out for a dedicated press. I remember as a much younger boy seeing a 12g lee loader and can't help thinking to myself, "now that couldn't be all that hard to make". I'm not all that keen on blowing myself up so before I try I though I'd ask here if you know of any 12g die sets for a S/S press. I've been told RCBS makes one but haven't managed to find them anywhere in NZ.

You might want to consider buying a second hand Lee Load All shot shell loader.

They come up on a regular basis and are usually very inexpensive.
I bought one off of Trade me a while ago for $80 including powder, primers, cases, wads and over 5kgs of shot.

The 12ga Lee Hand Loaders you remember as a kid also regulary come up for sale for around $20-$40.

I like to collect these hand loaders and they do work very well.

You may also want to use the Nail and dowel method.

You can modify this method to use plastic wads.

Roll crimper, its a bit slow and fiddly till you get the hang of it. easy way to load up a few hunting rounds.
Not all hulls roll crimp well, and you will need to make or buy some overshot cards,
I sum times roll crimp up a few 16ga non toxic loads if testing a new load. also easy to keep track of what you have as you can write on the overshot card.
roll crimper and cordless drill and your away.

Are there suck things as shotgun dies for single stage presses?

I had a good look in the expired listings on trademe. There have been heaps of ideal setups going at a very modest price so I'll keep an eye out for one. In the mean while I've adopted the dowel & nail method. I started making a mould for slugs last night and will attempt to put one together this weekend and let you know how I get on.

If the dowel and nail doesn't work for me I'll definitely give the roll crimper a go. Probably should get one for slugs anyway

I too am looking at this lee reload all 2
Looks so easy online via YouTube clips only place I could find online in nz new was outdoor supplies for $115
Might have to make few ph calls to shops see what they can do it for.

@pete you reckon this one stop kit is all one would need just to reload 2 3/4" ? Apart from wads powder shot etc ?

Yep

Thats all I have used for the last 30 years.

If your shooting large volumes it will take up some time but for duck shooting etc it's spot on.
