Tikka 243 1:8 twist, what to do...

Hey guys, looking to sort a load for my 243 and wanting to make the most of the twist rate without going too spendy. Rifle will mostly be used on private land (mostly open hilly stuff) with pigs, goats and fallow deer about the place. Also some reds in a pine block.

So with the 1:8 twist in mind I'm thinking the heavier 108 ELDM or 103 ELD-X, would either of these be a good all rounder? I don't know if either shoot well yet

I've used the 105 Targex and 95 Nosler BTs before and they performed well.

Powder wise, I have Superformance, 2208 and 2209 on hand.

Any of your options will kill anything in NZ very well. Id start with the eld ms as they re cheap available and have the best form factor. 2209 is a good place to start.

    i run RL26 over 108 ELD-M in my 1:8 243.
have previously used win 780 Supreme until it disappeared.

I've found the ELD-M's great on deer but not ideal on smaller goats.
the 87gr Berger's were much more authoritative on goats.

I'm going to give Superformance a crack as I don't have another use for it at the moment.

Sample packs ordered and should have some loaded to test this weekend with a bit of luck.

Was thinking of starting around 42 grains superformance and working up. I can't find superformance data for the 103/105 but have it for 108 and 95/100 weights. Hornady data has them both maxed out at 44 ish grains. Barnes data is a little spicier at a max of 46.8 for their 105 grain match burner.

So if I start at 42 and go up carefully should get some good results? Am I on the right track?

I find 1 grn power per 10grn bullet weight as a rough guide.

The 95 TMK is a good projectile in my experience.

Nah..what he means is that OFTEN there is direct correlation, plotable on graph between projectiles weight and powder charge,as projectiles goes up by X amount, powder drops by Y... In this case he suggesting X=10 &Y=1
    75/15/10 black powder matters

It's USUALLY safe to load projectiles with data for heavier projectiles...so yes your start charge looks correct.

    Thanks @micky_Duck We'll see tomorrow

I've got a speed ladder loaded up for both the ELDM and ELD-X to see how far we can go with superformance. And an old school method of four charges in sets of three for the 87 grain VMAX.

Interestingly the 108 ELDM and 103 ELD-X are the same length but the ELD-X has a 0.005" longer bearing surface/shorter ogive than the ELDM.

I have seated them to the same overall length of 2.810 but there will be a 0.005 shorter jump for the ELD-X, bonkers.
