Winchester 22lr subsonic 42 grain Max HP vs 40 grain

Anyone tried these side by side? After the most consistantly accurate for rabbits etc. Running a CZ455 and a 10/22 takedown. The 42 grain seems to be a bit cheaper. Could also try the ELEY 22 LR 38gr Subsonic Hollow Point 1040fps. Doing a run to Wellington so be good to stock up as HnF NP has little selection.

I'd be interested to see how the Elley cycle in the Ruger.

I've found the 40gr winchester to be reasonably consistant for accuracy in both guns and i've only had one fail to cycle in the ruger but I did replace the bolt with a kidd one

You need to find which ammo your rifle likes best. American-made Winchester ammo is not great but if your rifle likes it then you are on a win. My guess is that there are much better brands out there , but I dont own either of the types of rifle you mention

Thanks, it's a question of consistency at this point as the 40gr groups really well but I still get fliers

In regards to rimfire fliers, I've heard that rim thickness makes a huge difference. And higher quality rimfireammo has a more consistent rim thickness. Vortex did a podcast on 22 ammo and covered it and hornady make a measurement tool.

You can also make your own tool with a 223 case.

Even a visual inspection of the new winchester shows huge variation. The hollow is all over the place and some have random tooling marks that look like they've been wacked with a knife. I see GC has CCI sub hps back in stock. Might try them.

    I run the 42grn subs
They shoot great in my short barrel cz but i do get the occasional one that goes supersonic and flies off at random.

Very annoying when there is horses not too far away.

Yeah I'm shooting around horses and cattle. Not in the same paddock or direction obviously but they're nearby. Staying sub is important especially in calving season.

I tried them both, expecting the 42's wouldnt perform as well. In a 10/22 they performed as good, maybe even better, then the 40's. Tried the Eleys a few weeks back, and they seemed to be a bit lacking in power, and inconsistent, groups opened up from 20mm @ 50, to about 40mm+. And about an 80mm group at 100. Quiet though.
