Thread: Upcoming matches - Sparrowhawk Precision Rifle & Ultimate hunter

I see these 2 matches are up on the Sparrowhawk website.


Precision Rifle Match is on the 6th of December. If this is anything like last year, it's a one-day PRS-style match but perhaps a bit more field match shooting rather than PRS barricade style. Was about a round count of 70 last year with about 10x 2 minute stages of less than 10 rd each and ranges out to 900m or thereabouts. As a one-day match, I reckon if you're interested in trying PRS style match shooting it's a great one to go and give it a try

The ultimate hunter challenge is on the 31st of Jan next year. This is a really relaxed hunter style course, 20 (ish) targets on a walking course. No stages or time limits, just targets in realistic hunting scenarios - first round hits only count. Really good course to come and test yourself and your setup, gear and process. Everyone who reckons they're an epic shooter has the opportunity to come and show us!

Sparrowhawk is about 20 minutes out of Fairlie, South Canterbury (I have no affiliation with them)

Bumping this as a reminder that the Sparrowhawk Ultimate Hunter is coming up at the end of Jan. Every hunter should go shoot this match. All the experts can come and show how much better than me they are


I understand there'll be an optional higher-round-count class this time round, and maybe some changed targets/distances/positions - @Cowboy06 might be able to comment

Have you shot this before? Is it known distances used on targets or does this class alow rangefinders etc...

Yes, I have. The targets are all at different ranges but ranges are given on posts, or you can use a rangefinder to check (do this) or everyone in the squad shares ranges anyway

I don't think so, not many centerfire shoots aimed at hunters anymore in the NI.
@Gillie would know if there is anything.

There has been vaguely similar matches in the North Island a couple or few years ago. There isn't a similar centerfire hunters shoot currently in the North Island that I am aware of.
There is that many "practical or precision" rifle matches in NZ in 2026 it'll be hard work to run a new match without clashing with a date for something else!

Its a mint shoot but i liked the forum shoot dates much more. Ill be chasing stags down Otago! if anyone hasn't gone they should atleast once.

I didn’t realise the forum did shoot dates.
Are they a thing of the past ?
