Good on Patrick Gower.
Glad to see someone in the media has some sence.
And is willing to put his money where his mouth is. A few more of these around the country would be great.

I cannot stand that guy no matter whether I agree or disagree with him.
I don't like him either, and agree with nailing pests, with one proviso. They need to be dispatched humanely. Multiple air rifle hits wouldn't fall into that category, which seems to have been the main concern raised. That, and making sure someone's pet wasn't being shot.
Love him or hate him, he will be coping alot of flack from stading up and saying that.
Mid Canterbury has a massive feral cat problem and any cat that doesn't have a collar in a rural environment is deemed a feral. Certainly live trapping for cats is the best way to nail them and if there is any uncertainty of if they are a pet then they could be released. You Certainly know the difference between feral and pet when they are trapped!
If your hunting an area that isn't close to housing and there's someone's cat out there chances are it's killing. That is an issue for native wild life.
I fail to see how the pet argument is valid personally. A cat that goes out killing for the heck of it then goes home for a feed and a cuddle,is still a killer.
Make sure your cat is inside on the hunt days. If you can't do that, then it's not a domestic cat, it's feral. Put a collar on it, make for easy identification that it's some ones.
A 22lr won't kill a cat if its shot bad . ( Though there is of course a higher likely hood of a closely misplaced shot killing)
I shot one of the neighbours cats years ago as it kept ripping up my possum skins in the wool shed when I had them pegged out. Then told her. She took it well. Ended up looking after her cats and dogs when she went away.
I'm all for it going ahead. Wouldn't underestimate rural kids shooting abilities. They would have to have supervision, there are age laws and regulations for air rifles!
I'd say a reasonable amount will be using 22lr under supervision for it anyway.
Thinking that kids are going to be roaming around shooting cats with air rifles is a bit of a beat up I think (even though modern air rifles are well and truly capable) most of the kids would be out with parents well away from suburbia.
Predator free by 2050 my arse if nobody is allowed to do it
the people who kicked up a fuss about cats dying are hypocrites. They use emotive words, sign language (Shame, Insult, Guilt and the Need to be right) to get their way yet say nothing about our priceless native birds. Conservation in NZ and Aus means that pests have to die.
Really shows where their priorities lie.
I wonder how many micro chipped cats are out there? Given its not law, I would say bugger all !!
A big problem is that alot of cat owners dont put collars on their pets !
I would love to see a law made that ALL pet cats must wear a collar. That way we could get stuck into the rest of them [emoji41]

The stupid thing about being predator free (I'm not against it) is that yes cat aren't included and also hedgehogs!
Hedgehogs kill and eat any living thing in their path and leave no trace. I've seen hedgehogs in Doc traps at 1300m altitude not far from where I know a bunch of Falcons nest.
I work with a brother of one of the organisers, the word is they have canned it but here is the crunch for This year. They are loving all the attention reckon the comp will have the biggest field of entries ever. News crews were in Rotherham today a tiny village.
Gower is a twat but I agree with him in this matter. Feral cats need to die. As to NZ ever being predator free, pffftttt ha ha ha ha not going to happen.
My best cat shooting effort was near Te Kyoto in the ‘80’s.
Running cat about 75 yards away going right to left met 180 grain projectile from the 30-06 I was using, cat turned into a rag doll and cartwheeled into a pile of logs.
The only disappointment was there was no witnesses..:oh noes:
Fart, I'm allowed fart but not Far,k , ah there bypassed the system. Saw a bit where a kid fell into the gorilla's enclosure, did hope it was you know whose. Ah sorry we talking cats, did you know that depart of con anilihated millions of birds and all thru feeding the public bullshit. How many black robins are still alive being spoon fed for seventy yrs etc. Cats do a wonderful job in our society. Loneliness is a sign of a sick society. I have been where you are and one day you will be where I am.
Any idea of why they canned it Happy Jack? It came up on my Farcebook feed, and I commented cos I think its a bloody good thing for a whole lot of reasons, dead cats is only a small part of those reasons. I was at the point I was gonna enter myself and some of the grandkids, simply to give Rotheram School some more funds. And to flick the bird at all the anti's out there. Had no intention of actually going cos Im a bit busy at present.
According to the news article on the box tonight, some demented idiot had threatened to burn down the school if it went ahead.
Heard it was canned also on the 5am radio news, nothing to stop the lads have a private comp and leave those fukin media out!
As Gower stated, all feral cats need to be eradicated. I would go further and say all cats found a reasonable distance from housing areas need eradicating. When doing any of my weekly circuits hunting goats, cats are certainly on the hit list. Local DOC attitude seems to be shoot them but don’t advertise the fact. Even local residents seem to have the same attitude, even ones that own cats. Acquaintance who used to do pest monitoring in hills bordering Blenheim reckons domestic cats used to feature prominently in traps. Was told by council not to advertise the fact. The little shits certainly roam a fair distance.
In the immortal words of Rodney Rude, oooh I hate Cats
Well mate…its become international…..the yanks were running their lips about it this am on all the local and National stations……standard trifle…Ill leave it at that….
Distance,iv watched the odd wild cat thru thermal at night. They can cover a k or 2 in no time, let alone all night hunting.
Its also on the BBC in England this morning.
Thats a crazy. How in hell do you know if a cats micro chipped or not. In my view if you bring in a micro chipped cat, that was shot in area that it shouldn't have been, espially during a cat shooting event that's been publicly announced then you should have your cat ownership rights revoked as you obviously don't care that much about your cat and have no idea of just where your cat is. Feral with a chip. In that instance you can identify the owner.
I don't think the collar comment was serious but definitely don't take collar off, it could be the extra few grams that nets you the heaviest cat prize. :D
My mates at my local pub are calling me …..”the kiwi cat killer”
Oh fuck mate…please ,please DONT go there……lol….
Somebody should organise a side comp. In fact we could start a "Feral Unloved Cat Free NZ" non-profit society, apply for govt funding and hold regular comps all over with prizes for most tails, best tabby, heaviest kereru guzzler etc etc. R18 comp only, FAL required. Public weigh-ins.
…this whole saga will not end well….easier to carry on with buisness as usual with feral cats and keep it out of the news media…..say nothing but deal with it as you see best…..when it gets on International Telly….we’ve already lost the fight…
Wonder what the cat lovers would say if councils introduced a registration fee. Use the monies collected for feral cat control.
….my mum is in a retirement home in Orewa…lovely place…full of old kiwis living out their remaining days….behind the Home,is a creek, stream catchment area….few weeks ago I wandered down there with mum to take her dog for a walk etc etc………only to observe 8-12 empty cans of tuna in specifically placed areas….
Mum reckons half the ol biddies there are feeding the stray and Ferrell cats and she reckons the population has exploded(she hates cats)…..so the question begs……who do you actually shoot!!..(just kidding)
The little fucking mongrels are everywhere, killing bird life etc etc…….try explain the issues to some lonely 80,s+ nana she shouldn’t be doing that….go on,…I dare ya!!!
One less tabby - it was splattered by a truck on front of my gate, I guess I’ll have to make a nice hole for it’s final resting place.
If you're rural just put it on top of a fence post. The hawks will recycle it
