Yeah I'd say that's a myth.
They will be carrying far less energy though and will start tumbling pretty quick, so less likely to do damage once they've deflected.
FWIW I'd go a decent spring gun for reasons mentioned above (dive tanks etc) And you'll get one for half the cost or less. 50-60m is doable.
Advantage of PCP no recoil so can use spare scope you may have. Springer needs springer rated scope.
Rabbits are pretty soft so a flater shooting .177 be easier to manage and less to think about.
If you wanted to skittle anything bigger, or are comfortable dialing/holdover then .22 or .25 the way to go and will take more energy out further.
