Lake Okataina. Seen them every time I've been there.

I remember running into a couple while bush stalking for deer around lake Okataina back in the mid 1990s when I was considerably younger and better looking. They've been there a long time.
Anyone know what the deal is with Okataina hunting block? I see it has disappeared off DOC maps as a conservation area and as a hunting area?
There's a bit of that happening around these parts. Especially with the smaller blocks where access is by right of way over private land.
I am also keen to hunt and shoot wallaby's. Never ever seen one in person, only photos. I live in Rotorua, and everyone seems to say they are everywhere, even at the Redwoods here, as I have biker friends that uses the Redwood tracks and they reckon they see them there all the time. I have shot turkeys, possums, rabbits, hare, deer, pigs, magpies, but never ever seen or shot a wallby. Bucket list indeed.![]()
Head over to a campground near okataina or Rotoehu areas and have a wander around your tent during the night. They are often bouncing around the tents!
Yeah, apart from the obvious issues with the numbers of the things - it's quite cool to just sit back with a beverage and watch them bouncing about their business.
Have sent emails to both doc and councils on 4th may for any info or farms or areas needing help with numbers, no reply as of yet. I see there is some doc hunting land at the bottom of Lake okataina with a hunting area starting 1km from the road end, although there is nothing on the doc about parking and things.

I met a guy from Deerstalkers who said they arrange trips to do this. I’ve never been and not sure if they still do this. But might be worth reaching out. Good luck.
Might actually try camping out at night somewhere to find wallaby's. Its something I really really want to shoot to tick off my bucket list.![]()
