Blooded the new Howa mini action 223 this weekend gone. 3 deer out of a mob in the valley floor. 50-70m shots. Using 55g Sako Gamehead. Have tried a few 60-70g pills and none were grouping well. 55gr was doing .75moa. Did the job just as well as my 7m08. Loving having 2kg less rifle to carry as well.

Nice work. That Sako ammo groups well on my Howa mini too.

Right, theres probably something about it in this thread somewhere but was struggling a hit to find reliable supply locally of the 73gr match ammunition so against my better judgement have gone and bought dies and brass etc to reload. I have 73gr ELDms, sako brass, federal gm match primers and a heap of 2206h, anyone using that combo?

Nice rig there. I’ve got a ‘poverty pack’ Tikka and I’m struggling to pick up anything else right now.

It drives the 73g ELDM and 55g Hornady SP into tight little groups, and luckily for me the same POI at 100 so I don’t bother to reloading anything. The 73g have claimed a fair few animals now and I find they perform exactly as the 7mm 162g driven at 3000fps or so, but they are expensive and can be difficult to get – last bulk order I did cost me more than the rifle but had to twist some arms to get them. If you want, send me a PM as I’m about to try get my hands on another 400-500.

I'd better add a pic while I’m here – Fridays effort.

"I find they perform exactly as the 7mm 162g driven at 3000fps" as in they kill deer?

    Yes.

That comment was in response to Ryans other post about how they perform as I’m not smart enough to quote multiple posts

They fragment and cause a lot of internal damage, but very really do they exit. Hit bone, same result.

Someone will be along shortly to tell me otherwise, I’m sure.

I said ,maybe, ten years ago, that a 50grn ttsx from .223 produced VERY similar terminal results to bog std 130 GRN cup n core 270 round if shot through crease....except the damage is in opposite order eg the smaller pill does most damage on way in,the larger on its way out....nothing I've seen in years since then has changed that view...

BM2 or 2219 is a better powder for the 73 as you end up a bit compressed with 06H. However if that's all you've got....
