    Advice for Pureoras

    Morning guys and gals,

I have been invited on a trip in the pureoras this weekend with a couple of mates, problem is none of us have ever hunted in there before. Also wary of the fact that it is a long weekend at the start of the roar and probably half of the North Island will be in that general area trying to bag a bonehead.

I'm not after anyone's honey hole or particular spot x, but if anyone who is familiar with the hunting in that area wouldn't mind flicking me a PM with a quick steer on areas worth investigating or avoiding that would be most appreciated.

General plan will be to car camp (although open to suggestions otherwise) and use a quad to get a bit further afield then split up for day hunts (I've heard there are plenty of decent tracks in there). I will have the dog and both the others are relatively experienced bush hobbits.

Happy to reciprocate on info sharing in the lower North Island or spearfishing up north.

    Cheers,
    Adam

Mate I havnt been there for years but waimiha/tiki tiki flats used to be the goods for quad hunting. There's 3 or 4 lean too shelters if you get there early enough to get one. With that said it is a popular area and I'm guessing everyman and his dogg will be there. My best beat would be to do some serious research and walk into an area that's not easily accessed and ditch the car camping thought. You will be surrounded by weekend rambos and itchy trigger fingered newbies . Infact if it were me I wouldn't go in the pureoras at all this weekend.

    Piropiro Flats?? Not Tikitiki?
It will be the middle of queen street. The mountain bike trail has opened it up to a heap of people.
They were grunting middle of last week according to the old man.

Depending on where you are it can be quite rolling sort of country with no leading ridges. Easy to get confused at times. Not so bad these days with GPS.

As mentioned. We went one weekend last year and we had four wheel drivers. Pig hunters and bicycles all over piro piro flats. Still spooked 2 and got barked at by another mid winter. Maybe try towards Benny dale or middle hill hutbin kawekas.

Fletchers road was always worth a look. Plenty of spots to car camp and tracks and access out the wazoo.

There used to be another access in via Mangakahu Valley Road
Piro Piro Flats - great party atmosphere - but yes like Q Street

The Mangakahu option if it is still open be a better bet - not sure what access and if old lodge/hut still there but it also could be like the M1 nowadays
Was good hunting through into the Tiringamutu - and good access up onto the Hauhungaroa Range
Back up under Tuhua held good Deer too - but it was not pleasant bush if you went wrong
Roared well in there - but again - I am talking back a few decades :-)

Get a Doc hunting permit and if a tin arse like you shoots a good head you need to get it sighted in the first 24 hrs for the Pureora comp.

With your luck mate - you could find a 12 point royal in Auckland!! Never hunted there myself, but you will need a club to beat off all the hunters from north of the Bombays this weekend
