I like a mixed bag of a deer and some big Nevada blue grouse and often hunt with a drilling.
Are they of any use in NZ?

You're going to have to explain what a 'drilling' is..
As Long as you only hunt Private land they are legal to hunt with.
Its illegal to take a rimfire or shot gun onto DOC (Public) land because of this they are not very popular nor seen very often
Evening Lads, "A drilling refers to a combination gun that has three barrels." these could be two rifled and one smooth bore or two smooth bore and one rifled. in NZ we would refer to them as combination guns. I have never heard of anyone hunting with one but seen one at a gun shop.
Oh, we call that Kereru collecting up North...

Those Savage 24s have put so much meat in the pot here in the US! Farm kids had them and were always potting a rabbit, squirrel, pheasant or other critters.

Drilling (two smooth and one rifled barrel) and Bockbücksflinte (or "bock" - one smooth and one rifled) are pretty common here. I am looking for one as I often see geese, ducks, pheasants and deer on my preferred spot.
