Thread: Best light weight Stock and/or tactical chassis for hunting

Hey guys,

Can I get everyones input on this please. I have a Tikka t3x 7mm RM lite and want to upgrade the stock. I'm torn between a carbon stock (Would love to know your fav available in NZ and weight) Or a tactical style chassis as I used to be in the army and quite like the feel of having a full hand grip etc but concerned about the weight (Would love to know your favs on this to and weight).
I do quad and hiked hunting, usually very open (No bush really) shooting ave from 200-600 meters

I like chassis's & have a couple, nowhere near as light as a carbon stock.

Yeah this is the predicament im in mate. Carbon light for walking the hills but better accuracy and stability from a chassis just heavy.......ggrrrrrrrhhhhh
So confusing....I'm yet yo find a mix of the 2 which is ideally what im after ha

Been torn with this myself. Ive narrowed it down to a ken hendersen hitek hunter or a krg bravo with minimalist spigot.

I'm leaning towards the bravo as I'm worried a lite barrel plus carbon stock will feel like a toy. Maybe have a look at them?

Oh shit that’s a very nice chassis! Not in NZ though right? And can’t see a tikka long action model. That would be the one though!!!!!

My thin barrel howa is 4050g with a 3.6 - 10x scope, and a 5rd steel mag and bolt in.

Its 3930g with a little 2-7 on it.

No sure about long action options, there's an ausie site 'delta tactical' who stock them. I figure shipping will be cheaper than getting one from the us

I think the lesson that has come from ARs is just how good the chassis type stocks are. Apart from the weight. I reckon there is still room to make a lighter version of this style with less bulk. I put a chassis on my 10/22 and after a wee settling and getting used to it period I now rave about it. I am playing with the thought of having a play and making my Howa Mini in to a single shot for an ultra light walk about rifle. I have a Stug CF stock on it currently and it is super light. I have wondered about trying a light weight aluminium tube and then threading it to take an AR butt or even carrying the tube on and just welding an ali recoil pad butt on to it. And welding on an lug to take a pistol grip and trigger guard. Tube could be honeycombed and just the action glass bedded in to it. Have to work out diameter of tube needed to take the action in it. What do people think? I bet there are some clever buggars on here who could have a go with their rifles and report back. I do love single shots at times. Don't want to bow hunt and not allowed to own handguns so this is my version of short range hunting.

@Brian on here dabbles in those tube guns
