I was privileged to be with my brother when he shot this nice stag during the 2019 roar in the Ruahines, and later the same day i managed to sneak in on this old beast .
He is probably the oldest stag i have ever shot by the look of him , only a 6 pointer but a trophy to me and a very memerable day.

I stalked down and got to an open bush area and suddenly saw a pair of hinds. I let out a moan. The stag came in to view behind them. 80m away. I let out another roar and ran my barrel up the side of a tree. What happened next I have never experienced before or since. The stag let out a hell of a bellow and came at a dead run straight across the gully bottom and up to where I was. I was trying to get a shot but there was always a tree in the way as he came on. I stepped behind a tree as he came up the bank and around another tree only two to three metres from me. He wasn't stopping. I shot him point blank from the hip with my 270 and he slammed in to the tree I was sheltering behind. Unbelievable. I have done a lot of pig hunting and been charged plenty of times. But never by a stag like this. It was clear he thought I was a challenger and was really worked up. Awesome action. It took two trips to get everything back up and I was all in when I got it all back to the ute. Day hunts can sometimes reap rewards. Not my biggest stag but a really nice head and even. Also special as it is from my local area. Happy times.
