    Buying a Hunting Block

    Hi everyone.

I've been keen on buying my own slice of what I consider to be paradise! Somewhere I can hunt, fish, just be in the bush away from people.
I'd be purchasing by myself (God willing!!) so I wouldn't have to worry about any agreements with mates or anything like that I guess.
I have absolutely no idea of what sort of responsibilities I'd have if say the block was surrounded by DOC land. Shit would I have any annual costs such as council rates?? like I said I have no freaking idea. Would anyone be able to stare me in the right direction as to where I could get some info please?

Is the spot at big Bay sill for sale.... There been a few chunks of land go out in coastal southern fiordland out past blue cliffs / port Craig. There's a few big blocks for sale on Stewart island.

I'm sure you would have the same rates as anywhere else, local and regional councils.

There was 20 hectares of clear cut pine forest past kaitaia for 80000 dollars. Plant some natives or pine and liberate some deer and you'd be away cheaply

If you have to have a loan on it, no. Most banks will need 50% deposit on bare land. If you have the cash to buy it outright, save the money and put it into 80,000 chopper rides into the DOC estate instead - you don't have to pay the rates on that Unless you make the block commercially viable they are a millstone around your neck that can hamstring you.

Good point there pointer (no pun intended) there are some good looking cheap block in Oz. Hard to say if they'd be an investment to sell when you got too old to hunt it though

I reckon if all forum members chucked in a thousand or two we could get a pretty good hunting block (or more)

And then chase 5000 people for rates, insurance, maintenance repairs pest control etc... would be like a lot of Maori land, 10,000 owners that can't agree on anything and nobody wants to do anything because the masses undo it. Imagine 5000 forum members all thrashing the same spot? Either pay cash and own it freehold yourself, or don't bother - there is fantastic meat and trophy hunting on our public lands.

Find a nice DOC block and just keep applying for permits make a semipermanent bivvy, bury a few plastic screw top drums for storage and youll be ahead of the pack when Armageddon comes.
