    Cutting your teeth

Righty ho now I have your attention!

In this day and age of wizzbang magnums(I am guilty) and range finding scopes I feel it's easy to loose the simplicity of what we love to do!

By this I am meaning bush stalking and shooting deer with open sights in particular. I've only ever shot deer with a scoped rifle and really feel that to really embrace hunting in a pure form(not talking about using a spear and being scantily clad!).

What my objective is over the coming months is to shoot a deer with open sights. The deer cullers managed just fine so why can't I with my Marlin 336 SS? I love my wing shooting but deerstalking is my passion. Over the coming months(busy until May with work) I will attempt to do what is becoming done less and less the done thing.much less the number of people who know how to use open sights. A bit of time in the bush around Manapouri should be just what's needed.

I've looked at the 303 a couple of times, but haven't got enough tails in my belt yet, and the freezer isn't full either

Good on ya @Rock river arms hunter

    Its a buzz alright.

My old man never shot an animal with a scoped rifle in his entire life and he continually fed a family of six with Venison and Pork through hunting.

I now have his DMW Mauser in 300 Savage, it has had an aperture sight on it since he bought it in 1952 and will still knock them over from 3 ft to 300 yards without any special effort.

I have two other iron sighted rifles I hunt with and for up close and personally they just can't be beat.

Let us know how you get on

    Cheers

Good one, with a bit of practise open sights are plenty accurate for "normal" hunting ranges.
I still drag out the 303 for a hunt from time to time and it still does the job.

Nice. Ive shot plenty of goats with a open sight 303 and a 308 25 plus years ago. With practice you can shoot a reasonable distance and expect to bowl a animal over. Plenty of deer still get knocked over with a 30/30 without a scope etc. Good luck

My most memorable hunts have been with open sighted guns. I find they add another element of enjoyment to hunting. They also make you place more importance on stalking. The only issue to me is in twilight a scope is better but it's not a big issue. Take the marlin out for a walk, I'm sure you will enjoy it

Anything that brings back the excitement of your first hunt is a good thing. Bows, black poweder, an old .303... Its all cool.

    Best of luck.

I've shot more game with my old 303 than my featherweight flashed up 308. The 303 turns 100 this year (1917) so I took it out last weekend to hopefully relive the good times but the weather thwarted that. I'll take the rusty old thing for another walk when the deer start moaning in April for old times sake I reckon.
