    Down South Doc hunting

    Hey all,

so my 40th is coming up at the end of the year, the mrs is talking about shouting her and I down for a hunt.

My desire would be a trophy to remember of one of more of the following...

    Fellow buck
    Raikaia Red stag
    Chamois,

My hunting style is open tops glassing and long range shooting , I have all the gear for tenting somwhere,

Where would you recommend and for what species ?
What time of year would you recommend for my style of hunting ?
Which Helicopter company would you recommend ?
What time of year to suit all the above ?

I see awesome videos of times, of massive valleys down in the SI with plenty of glassing from up high, getting the spotting scope on to see if its worth moving in on etc. Also see good videos of fellow or reds down in big flat tussock areas ( possibly otago ?? etc ).

Any help and info would be recommended.

Well it will obviously have to be Rakaia to fulfill one of those lol but plenty of private blocks guided will cater for all three if your pocket is deep enough. As for when march though till about now or antlers may be no longer attached and /or hard.

Scott at HeliRural in Methven. Pay to get in touch sooner rather then later cos every man and his dog wants to fly in to the hills to shoot a stag from 1st Mar on. Personally if I wanted a good Rakaia red, I'd be flying right to the tops on any of the catchments leading to the Divide, and looking for a good stag in the last 2 weeks of February while theyre piling on condition pre roar. They wont be down low then, theyll be right in all those grassy little basins way up the top.
