Euro mount - New trick learnt!

This was just one of those jobs I didn't want to face, so I kept putting it off. But basically this roar was pretty average for me to be honest, I'd only put aside a week to go hunting and it didn't work out the way I'd envisaged...still fun, but no trophy to show for it, just a few scrubbers.

I literally threw the heads over my fence into the paddock and forgot about them (well not really, I just couldn't be fucked boiling them out as they hardly warranted the effort).

Today my conscience got the better of me, so reluctantly I went about unwrapping the plastic rubbish bag off the heads which had been sitting there since April! I really wasn't looking forward to doing this...but to my surprise there was no smell, no great mess, just a bit a liquid. Even better after a quick hose off, it was done!

Really impressed with this, no more boiling and water blasting...just leave it for the bugs to do the work!

A quick soak in some bleach, and it will be whiter than white...

    Too easy.
Post up a pic when you've got it mounted, always keen to see how others do things !
He nui to ngaromanga, he iti to putanga.

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

Out of interest, what do you guys do with your heads? I normally take the head out if I've killed it...but over the years they add up. I gave away a trailer load about 6 years ago, but once again I've amassed another small pile, which I store at my brothers factory (lucky him eh...not!). Kind of getting to the point where I need to dump some as other than memories they have no use and photos take up less room?

I've a friend who sold a heap of less then impressive heads on Trade me last year. With the right key words in the right catorgorie you might be surprised what some latte sipper in ponsonby will pay for em.. Just an idea if that don't have much worth to ya personally.

Cheers for the write up, What's your bleach/whitening recipe?, I always thought they go a bit 'chaulky' if you bleach them?
Went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn't find any.

Napisan, Mixed at a pure guess value...sprinkle it in, with hot water.

Bleach is okay if diluted, but can be a bit aggressive.

I then leave it outside in the sun for a week and this finishes the whitening.

Here's one I've done before using the boil, then diluted bleach.

    Came out fine.

Edit: if I shot a real trophy, I'd probably still boil it out, but it's a lazy and very effective way for one's you don't really care about. I'm surprised just how clean it was coming out of that bag.

Ended up giving a few away to this craft group.
No idea what they used them for but were happy to get them.
Always seems a good idea at the time to bring them home, but when you get home, look at the others
You've collected, and think why add to the pile ?

Interesting mate. Might try it with the next one. No stink you reckon? Keen to see if you get the yellow out of the bone, the yellow is generally fat deposits, which is why boiling with some detergent is normally preferred over letting nature do its thing.

As far as bleaching goes, don't use house hold bleach --- it'll make the bone brittle. Buy some hydrogen peroxide and make a brew up with water (I buy it off trademe in 5L bottles). You can reusue this, I store my mix in a 10L paint bucket and have used it 10+ times. Hydrogen peroxide is sensitive to the sun, so don't let the sun at it.

They'll sell well on tradme. Bit of a hassle though. Or you can just stop shooting scrubbers, or if you do for whatever reason, hang the head in a tree and leave it there

I'm drawn to the mountains and the bush, it's where life is clear, where the world makes the most sense.

I will never have this problem. Will only need the cap for a full shoulder mount anyway.😆

I have done that with heads, all the maggots etc are contained in the bag and do a pretty good job as there is no air to bake any skin or sinew onto the skull.
I have left a shitload of heads in the bush with the gut bags over the years, I have never bothered bringing out 4,6,8 point heads. The last 8 point I shot was given to my brother for craft work.
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Came out sweet as, nice and white...pretty effective way of doing it with little effort required.
