Fallow buck rubbing? a bit pic heavy?

I took the old 303 out for a walk today to check an area where a couple of weeks ago, I spotted some (to my untrained eyes!) potential fallow buck rubbing. This is not a typical fallow area, although I did have a fallow spiker run across the road in front of the car a while ago about 10kms away. Oh; I'm about 5' 11"; if that gives you a guage of the height of the "rubbungs"

The gully is used a lot by pig hunters, and it's where I usually go to pick up a couple of freezer goats. I'm picking that if it is a buck then it may have been travelling through as the valley gets quite a bit of pig hunting pressure. I thought it was worth going back out and sitting til dark. No joy, but was a lovely evening to sit in the bush with my 107 year old girl...

So what's the consensus; yay or nay? Thanks!

I would say Nay,the tree should be a bit more gouged, the rubbed part looks to smooth.and rub it way to high for a fallow or even a red.

I reckon that's too high for fallow. I've been seeing small barberry and whiteywood shrubs about 1m. high, thrashed by fallow.

Great pics, looks like nice hunting country.

I wonder what causes it then? Moa browsing? There are no cattle in there; and if there was they'd have to be ginormous.... @rockland The goats are always fat in that gully and there's always the chance of a pig if you're in the right place at the right time, The pigs had sure turned up last winter

Reds do get on their back legs and reach up the tree trunk for better rubbing success.

Yeah; but this is east Taranaki... There are red deer here, but in isolated spots and I wouldn't have thought here. Very puzzling!

to me.small vine wrapped around bark loosely, animal walks past gets vine across front, vine pulls against kanuka and strips off loose bark....nowhere near deep enough for antler rubbing.

These few are the only ones in the entire valley in a very sheltered spot in among the other manuka...
