    Flying with a gun

Hey guys looking at heading down south to shoot a few ducks and deer when the waikato season finishes next week.
Anyone had much experience taking a gun on a plane?
From what i have been told, locked hard case checked in to checked baggage as an over sized item.

Is there certain airlines to look out for? was hoping to fly jetstar as the price is better.

any feedback or advice would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

I’m flying jet star to South Island for a hunt tonight. Let you know how I go.

I've had no problem with Air NZ. Rifles in locked case. Bolts & ammo in checked in baggage. Ammo to be in manufacturers packaging or something that keeps them separated from each other.

I have a thread in here re this.
Jetstar staff walked with me to check in my rifle (locked case bolt etc removed).
For ammo the woman at check asked how much it weighed. I told her and it was all done.
Of course make sure you do the pre registration for dangerous foods and print and take to airport as they need that.
Jetstar was zero hassles (chch-Ack return).

The weight limit for ammo includes the box and packaging.

Manufacturers original packaging is no longer required but it should be a proper ammo box and ammo not touching each other. Needs to look neat and tidy on X Ray. Make sure theres not a spare round in the bottom of your bumbag. For a flight to Oz they picked up a snap cap in my carry on bag a couple of weeks ago - embarrassing but I still got to fly ( minus the snap cap).

Can have ammo and bolt in the same checked bag as long as not with the firearm.

Check your firearms licence is current and on you.

The whole system is way better than it was 10 yr ago.

Very much advised that you contact your carrier before hand and let them know you will be arriving and flying with a firearm. Manual check in at the airport with staff
