Thread: A good day in the hills

Just a little round up of a great Sunday hunt with some all round good buggers.
After various unfruitful walks and getting sick of boring solo hunts Id been pestering Hntmad to take me out for a hunt up the local range next time he went out. CraigC was also local and straight onboard.
Yesterday (Sunday) was organised and an early start was locked in. 4am meet at macas for a champions feed and we were off over the rimutaka hill to meet hamish. Couple of handshakes , chuck all the gear and dogs into the same wagon and a short drive and we’re off.
530am we were beating the feet up at an undisclosed public road end under torch light to get up high and see the sunlight warm the valley.
Not long after, the first deer of the day is spotted having a snooze below us 280 yards out, a yearling delicious fallow. Decide to use Craig’s suppressed 284 to protect the dogs ears and not spoke out the rest of valley as I’ve bought a canon without a suppressor .
284 does the damage and Hamish chucks one through it for good measure , we’re on the board only an hour in.
Some quick butchery and tips from Hamish and we carry on to some likely spots in the next valley.
Soon spot a smorgasbord of animals enjoying the first bit of sun after a few days rain- a fallow, 3 red hinds and a moo cow.
The 3 creeps manage to creep into within 400 yards two reds feeding on a grassy face and the rifles are lined up for the tandem double rudder shot . 3 2 1 shoot and both the deer are smoked. The third red at 505 yards swings around to see what all the fuss is about and Craig drills it at 500 in swirling wind no worries at all. Unreal. I’m thinking I need to come out with these blokes more often
The easy work was done and the pups made short work of finding the deceased deer. The next 5 hours was butchering and slogging the meat back to the truck. It was sore shoulders and I slept like a baby last night but it was a day to remember! Heaps of laughs, see some new sights and filled the freezer. Day done

Just a note: theres some bloody good c&nts out there - I’d never met Hamish or Craig before the hunt, they went out of their way to show me the jedi ways and were total legends so cheers lads

It was a absolute pleasure. Lock and load another date and we’ll do it again. Once we’ve eaten all those sausages!

awesome to see you found time for a cuppa tea/brew....MOST important part of the day.
bloody good effort you two experienced guys,and the trusty goldy brown sniffing machine.
Dave,you will have learnt way more than you first think from these guys,take the time to chew over the day and work out the WHY of how they did things.....you will be leaps and bounds ahead if you can replicate it when you head out yourself.

Mate that was an epic day, while I have sore shoulders and other parts of me I did, I would do it again,maybe a little less lead lol. Weigh my bag at home and it was 21kg. Bring on summer for less gear.....not that the xtra gear was heavy lol

Next trip a ninja in the bush

Have to say @ARdave has spent some time with some other gd roosters from hear so came highly recommended. Bloody gd bastard.

Now to find some more deer

Dave what pack was that you had on and what sort of load will it carry (I saw it in Craig's pics, not these ones)?

Good hunt, thks for the write up and pics. I'm interested in what made up the 21kg in the pack for a day trip? And what you would drop out and what target weight for next trip?. I just backpacked around Europe for 4 mths and my main pack was 18kg with another 4-5 kg in front day pack. But I wasn't hunting or covering sleeping out. Also 5km was my longest hike, on pavement. Wouldn't want to take 20kg plus into the hills if I could help it. So keen to know:-)

20 kg was the end weight, didnt start that way. On trip out had 2 x boned out back legs, 1 x none boned yearling fallow leg. 3 x back steaks. Cooker for lunch, 2 liters of water, macpac puffer, swazi anorak, AU sweater, knife, headlamp, bag of lollies, wet wipes, mini tree saw. I would stop the puffer and swazi anorak but took them due to the forecast and the possibility that we could be sitting around alot. So didnt start with the meet and that would have been 2/3 of the weight

it was a hunters element 30l day pack jobbie, i wouldnt recommend it to anyone - the frame collapsed, a buckle broke and the zip eyes came out
