I use BackCountry Navigator on android - if its available on iOS I can highly recommend. Does not need cell coverage and you can download range maps prior to going out.

A mate tried this on his I phone but drained the batt so quick................on a three day hunt he was F%&ked after the 1st day.........I reckon you best to buy a proper GPS....I got a Garmin Oregon ...with 2 batteries using it off and on during the day......I get 4 days usage. two years ago during the roar Me mate shot a stag on dark.....by the time we dressed it out it was dark dark.... three hours from our fly the Garmin or (gadget) as we call it got us home nor drama. ...we both reckon with out it we would have been spooning in a fern bush for the night without it.....

I would highly recommend the viewranger app no coverage needed, each map cost around $3. turn your phone to flight mode to save power and you can buy back up batteries for long trips.

If you ''check out'' the area you intend to go to prior to going there, the phone will remeber the map image and store it in your phone...then the GPS feature is sweet.

However if you don't do this and there is no reception - then all you'll be looking at is a dot on a blank screen. Which is what I made the mistake of doing ONCE!

The maps that come with any iphone are far more detailed that google maps or google earth.
What looks like a clearing on google can be acurately id'd as a swamp or whathaveyou on apple maps.
This is not helpfull in terms of gps app but hey im full of useless info

Just got this app yesterday following your advice. Have the whole of NZ in 1:50,000 now. A lot more detailed than the Hunting NZ books maps that I was using. A few of those are 1:25,000 but too many are 1:250,000. Amazing app and the GPS seems to work nicely in flight mode, but I'm yet to try it in the bush. Has quite a few power saving modes too.

What sort of battery life do you get having the GPS on in flight mode all day and checking maps? Very impressed so far.

You can buy those extra power packs that you can plug your iPhone in to. Provides about another 2x the life of your built in battery I think. One of those combined with a car charger should be good for a few days I reckon but I'll let ya know how it goes. Would prefer not to have to buy a GPS - one less thing to carry!

    Now you're just being silly!!

In all seriousness though - it's much smaller and lighter than a handheld GPS, not to mention everything else it can do. So if I can get by with it as a GPS as well then I will .
