Poolars went years before the other 3 i se to drive in there even made a bit of a film clup of it ill put it up if i can figure out i miss that place
Remember first going into the original Poplars hut some 45 years back as a kid with the old man and his hunting mates out of BoP NZDA.
Poplars hut and a lot of trips into Pukareao (spelling) hut. Fark.....many many moons ago!!
Only time I was there was in late 90s
Stopped at the old Poplars site and had a brew after coming over from Okui and Mangapouri
Had a stormy night at Maungapouri. 4 or 5 locals came in during early hours for shelter and a brew. I slept through most of it and they left before I woke up
Stayed a couple of nights at Midway
Met a possum trapper after we just about shot his horse as they broke through the bushes
Turns out he was the brother-in-law of someone I worked with years later
how do you post a video off my computor
Was a great place to hunt....

I shot my first deer in the Horomunga. Spent more than a couple of nights at Midway Hut and met a guy in there who has now been a good mate for over 25 years. I recall an old guy named Harry in there, met him a couple of times. Interesting character. We arrived in late to Midway one night and he made us a brew while we unpacked. I still remember that brew - a clasic billy tea. Its a shame to hear the huts have been burned down.
Yep harry is the guy sometimes there, would be a sighn up half way down the poplars warning of his horses he had his own hut in there as well up near where you turned off at the dead sabaru
Bruce Cobb also did alot of hunting in there
Attachment 108498used to be cool as in there sometimes guys on horses would stop at the hut for a brew on their way through cool times
Love the memories.... thanks @northdude.
So has anyone been in recently can u still get in with a 4×4?
