    Hunting in Canterbury

    Hey fellas

Looking for some advice on hunting in Canterbury, in particular inland from chch central. I've just moved down here and am itching to get out. In the process of shipping my rifle down at the moment and want to have a go next weekend.

I've been looking at 13 mile bush/Broken river, sort of area as they seem to be the closest to where I am is it any good out there or should I head further into the alps?
And this time of year should I be looking up on the tops or more focused down in the valleys/by the river? I've been trying to get my first deer for a wee while now but have only got as close as spooking a couple off so far so I'm still learning right now but I can shoot good.

So far I like the idea of heading in broken river around above lake lyndon as it looks nice and open from what I can see on the maps, might be easier to glass from out there? Are there any good 4x4 tracks that take you further in from the main road round there?

I'm used to trudging through the Tararuas up north and only being able to see for 50-100 yards so this will all be quite new to me. I've got a .308 P&H and can shoot accurately at 200Y but haven't had the ability to shoot at longer distances yet

Additionally if anyone is heading out at some point soon who knows the area and wouldn't mind me tagging along I'd love the opportunity, I'm still quite new to hunting so would be great to learn from someone with more experience

    Cheers All
