They do 'take a steel' very well - a med / course which is a big help on the hill. Those really hard blade knives need stoned.
The knife that you bought off Nga has the very best blade shape that I have seen Ryan. How does it actually go ??

Its a brilliant knife, holds an excellent edge and is easy to touch up. The shape is a brilliant allrounder, it skins and bones very well and sits well in the hand. Im very happy with it and think it wont be replaced anytime soon

Diamond stone, job done. Once you get a hang of sharpening a scandi they are far and away the easiest grind to sharpen. No guessing as to bevel angle

buffing disc does a quick effective job on them :-)

Was into fixed blades now folding knives as it won’t get lost in my main pack pocket or daybag.

Get a bahco for now, once you've cut a few animals and spent some time in the bush get something that you know will suit your needs

I would add a mercator as another option if you think a folding knife would suit. I have used mine on all the deer I have dress out in the bush. I have an old green river skinner I use for sheep at home but it’s too big and heavy for me to carry it into the hills.

just go for a mercator. easy enough to do a deer with one, i keep mine on a lanyard around my neck so is always handy. i dont know why people charge around with big belt knives, apart from the tingle you get in your balls putting one on..

Grab 1 off these , cheap and good , comes with a good knife with sheath for the bush , then you got all the knives you need for butchering at home , thats if the mrs doesn't claim them for the kitchen...

Im a bit of a knife freak...not half as bad as some on here though...... been through many over the years and now its the same 3-4 that get the nod more often than not. the mercator is great....I have many and always have one in the day bag as a spare. the bachos are AWESOME have one in each vechile and have dressed deer and pigs out no issues at all. they stay sharp for ages and a quick sharpen has them back t razor sharp again...not sure why guys bag the sheaths they come in...personally I reckon they are top notch and I will happily put it in my pack ,wont do that with any other fixed blade as have wicked scar across shin from when it goes wrong.
svord peasant knives are good too got the mini and std size have cut up deer with both..the mini got it done but a bit bigger blade wouldve made job easier.
gerber make a good knife but you got to know ya stuff to get them sharp once dulled,same goes for buck.
one thing to remember just like vechiles or rifles you much more likely to use n abuse a cheap one....so if you do get a good expensive model, have something on hand to use as a hack and dont use tip as a screwdriver....twisted tips are a mongrel to straighten or sharpen.
