Knives are a very personal item. Best to go and try some to see how they feel and fit. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5b7ae07d29.jpg
I carry and use this everyday. It’s a Svord Farmers model. Won’t suit everybody but it’s what works for me.

depends on what you want to skin and gut, for a cheapy bunny knife you cant go past a mercator (about $50). i have even skinned goats and a deer with one

Avoid these.
my Mercator has been through about 250 ducks a few goats a pig and 1 deer, absolutely rate it.
compact sharp as a scalpel and easy to carry.
only down side would be that it is easy to loose so I keep mine on a paracord lanyard
for a cheap on the hill knife you could do a lot worse than a bahco about $10 each and you won't cry if you loose it too, just gotta sharpen it a bit more often than some of the high end knives
I use a mercator (make sure if you get one, its a genuine one not a copy)
Depends on the budget, as said nothing wrong with a bahco, there is someone on here... @Nga they make a "jack of all trades" knife that has been popular.
Plus one for the bahco the colour makes them difficult to loose. For a folder mercators are hard to beat. A bit thin in the handle but will do everything.
X2 on the svord farmers or similar shape anyway.
had a Kershaw bear hunter for years. That was a good knife (still is I spose but only for the feckers that pinched it when we got burgled).
Got the son a similar one -Antelope? I think, for his bday. That's not a bad knife either.
Those ones by Nga look good but out of his price range.
I'd be suggesting something closer but not quite a skinner. It will still cut up everything but have a nice belly in it.
make it a lot easier skinning a redskin especially if he doesn't want a bunch of holes in the skin.
In saying that the Peranta type blades with the replaceable inserts seem to get good write ups. Never had my hands on one and they are definitely not a skinner shape.
Hard to go past any of the knives used at the works. 30-40 bucks and easy to sharpen. Victronox, victory etc. Green river still bloody good as well. Or go real cheap and get a Bahco, cut like a razor and nice and small. I've gone away from carrying a knife on my belt, just easier to have a small one in a pouch or pack. Mercator will dress an animal in the bush piece of piss.
Always great to see new guys joining the clan
I have a deal for you - a custom Sandt Blades hunter:

OAL: 225mm
Blade length: 105mm
Blade thickness: 3.2mm
Bolsters: stainless 304
Weight: 147 grams
Handle: African hardwood with red liners

Attachment 96826
Attachment 96827
Retail: $350
You can have it for $100 with one condition - you post some photos for us of your next hunt. :)
If you are young and fit pretty much anything that holds a bit of an edge will work. As you get older and the joints dont work as they used to the handle becomes as important as the blade.
clever bugger @terryf
That's a good thing dude.
Have had to dress out a white tail with a syderco dragonfly (blade length.... 57mm) it worked would I do it again, not if I had too.
Another option is the vitronox kitchen knives, they come razor sharp and last ok and I think they are cheaper than the bahco. They are a thin blade so risk of snapping is there.
For a first knife go with the Bahco. Good blade shape ( not as good as Nga makes ) and not too long which is very important while you learn how to use it and a fluoro handle so you don't loose it in the dark and can see it when it ends up in the kitchen sink with the other dishes. Throw away the sheath that comes with it and make one out of Polyurethane pipe (AKA Alkathene). Cut a piece 50mm longer than the knife. Heat it in the oven on a piece of plywood or similar that wont concentrate the heat on the contact surface like metal - until soft enough to shape. Then put the knife in leaving only about 30mm of the handle showing, mark it and form a belt loop ( two vertical cuts 8mm apart & 50mm long ) then clamp the sheath with two blocks of wood in a vise to cool. Once cool cut a slot to release the handle a little - the finished sheath should grip the knife handle with slight spring tension. Leave the bottom of the pipe sheath open so that crap falls out - it is much longer than the blade so you cant get knife stuck.
Bahco are a great knife for the money but for a beginner they are real bastards to sharpen
@terryf sweet as mate, as mentioned I have a Mercator and it is more than up to the task, I don't need another blade but for that kind of deal it would be one of those nice to have but not necessary to have .
I appreciate it was a 1 off offer to the O.P
..........shit where did that go? :P
Was into fixed blades now folding knives as it won’t get lost in my main pack pocket or daybag.
Get a bahco for now, once you've cut a few animals and spent some time in the bush get something that you know will suit your needs
just go for a mercator. easy enough to do a deer with one, i keep mine on a lanyard around my neck so is always handy. i dont know why people charge around with big belt knives, apart from the tingle you get in your balls putting one on..
Orange handle easy to spot if i drop it lol
Thanks guys def gives me a good inside what to look out for. Cheers
Ok will look into tonight cheers
Grab 1 off these , cheap and good , comes with a good knife with sheath for the bush , then you got all the knives you need for butchering at home , thats if the mrs doesn't claim them for the kitchen...

Im a bit of a knife freak...not half as bad as some on here though...... been through many over the years and now its the same 3-4 that get the nod more often than not. the mercator is great....I have many and always have one in the day bag as a spare. the bachos are AWESOME have one in each vechile and have dressed deer and pigs out no issues at all. they stay sharp for ages and a quick sharpen has them back t razor sharp again...not sure why guys bag the sheaths they come in...personally I reckon they are top notch and I will happily put it in my pack ,wont do that with any other fixed blade as have wicked scar across shin from when it goes wrong.
svord peasant knives are good too got the mini and std size have cut up deer with both..the mini got it done but a bit bigger blade wouldve made job easier.
gerber make a good knife but you got to know ya stuff to get them sharp once dulled, same goes for buck.
one thing to remember just like vechiles or rifles you much more likely to use n abuse a cheap one....so if you do get a good expensive model, have something on hand to use as a hack and dont use tip as a screwdriver....twisted tips are a mongrel to straighten or sharpen.
@Beginnerhunter you did see the deal from terryf earlier on?
I would add a mercator as another option if you think a folding knife would suit. I have used mine on all the deer I have dress out in the bush. I have an old green river skinner I use for sheep at home but it’s too big and heavy for me to carry it into the hills.
Somebody Pm this guy , tell him to take Terry's fantastic offer.
