Hi all,
I’ve been wondering what everyone’s go to food for lunches when out for a day hunt?
OSM. Does the job. Only for day hunts though.
Usually for a day hunt i make a couple of bacon and egg sandwiches. Have some snack food too. I prefer to take more than skimp out
Couply sangas
Wraps, cheese and salami or just salami sticks n
Cheese salami crackers and nuts and cranberries
Home befor lunch. If i get a deer,it a couple of speights and grilled venison steak.Life is good.
Depends a bit on the hunt and what I have in the cupboard. OSM bars are good cos it's quick and easy, cheese & crackers & tuna another easy one. Bacon and egg pie if I'm motivated the night before. Longer multi-day trips is usually a mix of OSM or muesli bars, home made jerky, scroggin and lollies.
Personally I go all out on one day missions as a few more grams and bit more bulk really don't matter. A big pink icing boston bun full of butter, fresh fruit, left over cottage pie.... Save the osms and dry salami wraps for longer trips.
Small tins of tuna [lemon pepper] and a few snax biscuits to scoop the tuna out.
In a perfect world some of the bearers would carry a picnic hamper fully provisioned with cold meats, bread, a selection of cheeses, salads and dessert plus suitable cold beverages. Others would have a folding table, chairs and a pavillion for shade as one can't be expected to sit on the ground like the natives.
However the world's not perfect, I sit on the ground, drink Luke warm water from a canteen whilst having a muslei bar, some biltong and maybe an apple.
biltong, cheese sticks, pics peanut butter sachets, nuts
I don't know how I survived without Boston buns as a young fella. One for smoko and two for lunch:o. Have no idea how I didn't develop Diabetes!
The Cambodian run Hot bread shop in Turangi always gets a hammering on the way to my hunting haunts. And a bit of chocolate to assist with the carry up the hill back to base:P
Chicken breast or roast or chorizo sandwich (choripan).

Back when I was a teenager it was nothing for lunch - a milo at 3:30am for breakfast then out all day on the horses chasing pigs, possum skins or goats, usually home about 6pm for tea.
More recently, I used to take quite a bit of food, like most of a cold meatlovers pizza, but actually find I feel better if I don't eat too much, so currently its a couple of ham sandwiches, or maybe a cold pie and a sandwich if passing a bakery. And the dog always gets her share, so I only get about 3/4 of the food if I'm lucky.
just take more snack food = nuts (cashews), or nut/fruit mix, jerky or salami, dried fruit, tuna pockets, energy bars(ones with plenty of protein).
This looks amazing. Might make this for dinner one day
day hunts, mainly salami and crackers, I tend to find personally id rather more short breaks snacking than one long break with a larger feed, just me though
Whatever I can find in the pantry, no particular favourites. But for longer tramps salt and vinegar chippies as they have every thing you need.
Carbs
Fat
Salt and vinegar
If I take a snack, tin of "Texas strawberries" can make a brew in the tin after.
OSM bars
Bag of mixed nuts & raisins & dried apricots
Tin of sardines
500ml of V
There’s a couple of emergency oat bars stashed away in secret places in my hunting packs.
I carry a litre of water too and often refill it at the springs in this kind of weather.
I find that what I carry for energy on the hill is more than sufficient on one fundamental assumption… I’ve eaten a mega breakfast with all the good stuff.
I often hunt with a bunch of guys - all pig hunters - who are shockers for bad morning habits. Think along the lines of breakfast = multiple coffees and smokes. Because I am usually quartermaster general, mess sergeant (and ordnance officer), I have taken to forcing them to eat my full breakfasts, with a side of cereal and all. They object every time but not one of them has ever complained of feeling hungry until at least 3pm.
:sarge:
i go to reduced to clear for cheap protein bars and high calorie food, My mate accuses me of the most unholy diet. However cold pies out of a bakery from the day before last a long time in the pack and have fat, carbs and protein!
otherwise it is cheese slices, crackers and jerky. maybe a carrot.
the trick with boston buns is to flip the top half over so icing is in the middle.......
lately Ive been lazy and just chuck bag of potatoe chips in,took two BBQ mutton chops yesterday as well as the chips, brought half bag chips home....
must go buy some more boston buns for next time, thanks for the reminder...ALWAYS used to be my go to lunch...
Ummm I dont know! Hang on Ill just beat the porter and find out whats on offer.....come here boy:yuush::thumbsup::XD:
Mantecol, the inevitable dessert, for after eating, to carry in the backpack and for waiting at night.

Not a fan of salamis and processed meats like that. I grab what ever is available in the fridge, pork or mutton sandwiches real butter, tomato sauce, fruit , can of cream rice, packet of chit chats something along those lines.
^ I've always wondered if animals scent those processed meats easily.
Cold KFC from the night before.
My go to is pate and a couple of cheesy buns.
The pate has heaps of fat, energy and flavour, everything you need and want. Not the best for day 6 of a mid summer hunt though
Game changer for us has been taking our home made Salami ,Pastrami ,Smoked Sausages ,Jerky & Biltong etc ,having the Biltong & Jerky to chew on the go really helps pushing on & helps with concentration during Glassing sessions & we have a system when we are Vak Pak'n where the sealed bags becomes a handy "serving dish / plate" all no mess or fuss .

can’t go wrong with a pavlova topped with mashed potato and garnished with a chop….
at home.
When out for a hunt I usually like to take a venison steak sandwich and some lollies (natural confectionery snakes or dinosaurs)
boiled eggs go good too, or a resealable bag with some cold roast meat and veg with cuts of soft cheese mixed in that morning.
I also keep about 2-3 energy gel sachets you can get from the bike shop in the 1st aid kit on the belt.
Useful for the carry out or for those times when it seems like the road end is taking forever to reach.
Crackers/wraps or buns with salami/tuna, cheese, capsicum. Piece of fruit & nuts, snack bar for mid afternoon.
A nice orange can be a good option on hot days instead of water
If its just a quick day trip usually a osm or maybe some jerky and cheese.
If I have the time the night before and there is stuff in the cupboards I am a big fan of bacon and egg and cheese and onion toasties cold.
Two of those will keep you going from 2 in the morning till 10 at night if need be.
Just a couple of sarnies.... Cheese, ham or cold meat etc. Maybe a cold cooked saussie or steak from tea the night before. Nothing flash....
